Anti-Virus: Avast sucks

N

no

I'm ticket off.
I downloaded Avast for home ( http://www.avast.com/ ) & installed it.

It asks me if I would like to have my email checked, but doesn't
specifically mention that it will be modifying the entries in my mail
client's configuration.

I the try to activate the program, and it won't accept the
registration code that the company just sent me.

So I decide to remove it. --no uninstall option!-- Not even
in the add/remove programs. (I'm using Win98SE)

Goodbye Avast.

I've heard AVG is another free anti-virus. I'll try it,
but I sure hope it's better than Avast.

If it sucks too, then I guess I'll have to choose between one of
the Big Boys and pay some yearly fee to get updates... :(

I downloaded Avast for the first time a week ago. I'm not having any of the
problems you mention (XP). I like Avast just fine so far.

I guess we will all have different experiences depending on our
individual PC set-up, in my case I have recently switched from AVG to
Avast as the new AVG 7 completely crashed my PC and I had to reinstall
Windows XP and all my hardware/software/data all over again which took
ages! So decided to give Avast a go instead and no problems with it so
far, didn't affect my email in any way.........

I have been using avast! for quite some time now, and I have never had any problems at all with it. Running on a 98SE box.
Starting with version 3.?? , all the way up to the current version 4.5.523
If the program doesn't show up in add/remove programs, then it is most likely a bad install. Suggest you redownload and try again.
It really is a good program, if you can get it installed on your machine.

It seems a bad installation.
I never had a problem with Avast in about two years I've been using it.

Your choice. I'd do another try with Avast!

We experienced this on my sister's W98SE system- her OE6 settings kept
changing and she was unable to send or receive email. Avast has addressed
this issue: http://www.avast.com/eng/email_problems.html#idt_225 I just
deactivated Avast's email scanning altogether on my sister's system- if
she opens an infected attachment, the real-time scanner should catch it
anyway. Her OE works fine, now.

Problems entering your license key? Look here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/registration_licen.html#idt_220

Avast has also addressed the possibility of problematic uninstalls:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html

All of these solutions were easily located in the support section of the
Avast site, which you give no indication of having looked at. I suspect
that you will continue to quickly reach the conclusion that various
software, antivirus or otherwise, "sucks" simply because you can't be
bothered to do any reading.

Regards,
Ian.

I have been using Avast for ages now and I've never had a problem with it.
I even gave it a 5 star rating on my site
(www.freewareoffice.com/?action=view&id=917).
Avast is my favorite AV program, I've had loads of problems with Norton,
BitDefender and some others.

Avast does have an uninstall option, and the key they mailed me was correct
the first time.
Ever thought you did something wrong? It's easy to piss of software like
that but I respect the authors...

Your email may still be functionning, but it must have affected
your settings. Having looked at the modifications it made, I now
understand that the way it scans emails is by placing itself between
your email client and your ISP's server. I would have appreciated
such an explanation _before_ any changes were made.

No, I'll admit that much. But when I decided to remove it, I
was very unhappy at finding that there was no uninstall option. There
should have been a link to either that page or to their utility
in the start menu's program group.

Goodbye Avast.
I'd ask for my money back.

I'm happy I got my $0 back.

Look, I never complain about freeware when it doesn't perform up
to the level of paid for software. Even if it's too slow, doesn't have
enough features, etc., I never say anything except "thank you" to
the authors.

But I do get unhappy if it modifies my settings without being
clear about what's going to happen, or if the uninstall is made
annoying and/or non-standard.

Both Avast4.5 home edition and AVG7 free, run*together* quite happily on my
98SE machine, both scanning

On my machine, 98SE:
Avast can be removed quite easily from using - Start>Settings>Control
Panel>Add/Remove programs.
If it was installed properly it appears as 'Avast! Antivirus' in the menu.

I've had no problems with Avast...been using it a year or so.

I tried it, and it worked fine, but it was too resource-intensive for me,
and I returned home to AVG6.

What are you gonna do after Dec. 31?

Perhaps the same thing I did: had AVG6, tried Avast, found it too resource
hungry, tried Antivir PE, never looked back.

Look for avast!_External_Control.zip in alt.comp.binaries to remove
AVAST or fix problems. --Donald
