AVG Free vs AVG Professional

I've had some good advice here from a number of people - many thanks for
all your help.

Actually, although I may well go with AVG7 (trial first) I must say that
despite the drawbacks of AVG6 OE plugin (in that it scans an email after
it's already in the inbox) it is nice not to have to configure my (many)
different email accounts. With AVG7 I'll have to do that and try to get
that to work with K9 as well (which I think I've worked out - timer will
tell).

It is a bit of a nuisance configuring various email clients with AVG7 but if
you copy the FAQ on their website about configuring Incredimail , the basics
apply to other programs.
Essentially you put all the pop/smtp addresses into the AVG program and set
up your email client replacing pop/smtp addesses with 127.0.0.1 and
appropriate port number as given by the AVG email scanner set up. ( email
scanner properties/plugins/servers )
Once you've done the first one it becomes obvious.

yup that is right :)

for example say you pop and smtp servers were...

pop.example.com and smtp.example.com then you just enter them into AVG
and set the ports. I use 5110 for POP and 5025 for SMTP. Then I can
use any e-mail client with it and just set it to use 127.0.0.1:5110
for POP and 127.0.0.1:5025 for SMTP

It works fine every with authentication as my SMTP requires
authentication to send (which all should do IMO).

Thanks to you all. I installed AVG7 and got it to work in the way you
describe. However, I kept getting a problem with Kerio PF 2.1.5 where it
was complaining about a particular AVG file and wouldn't run properly.
So I have reverted to AVG6, at least for the time being. When I'm
feeling brave enough, and have the time, I shall probably try AVG7 again.

Sorry to reply to my own post, but how did Norton Antivirus 2004 (which I
stopped using die to its fotprint on my PC) manage to scan incoming and
outgoing emails without my having had to set special incoming and
outgoing mail server/port options? Does it have a plugin for OE etc.
(it didn't ask me to specify which email client I was using)?

I believe the resident scanner just intercepts and scans all traffic on the
default smtp and pop ports. Nod32 works the same way. It's much more
convenient than the AVG email scanning system.

But my view is that email scanning is just a marketing tool that doesn't
offer much, if any actual benefit over real time scanning which will catch
viruses delivered via email as soon as their attachments are saved to disk
or executed.

I am not fully aware of the difference. I don't think AVG6 has support
for The Bat! which I needed. Also the support is good as relying on
newsgroups and forums isnt a great idea. I like to be able to contact
the developers.
No problem using AVG 6 with BAT. I do it for a long time now ( maybe a year)
never had any problem. There is a plug-in: avgbat.bav I am not sure if I found
it on Bat or AVG website, but if you have a problem locating it let me know. It
will scan before you receive it in Bat and works together with K9.

Win:98 with Bat: 2.04.7

I have it all sorted now, thanks anyway though :)
