AVG Free vs AVG Professional

Hi,

I've been using AVG Free edition for some time now and find it pretty
good - with my old, slow PC (win98SE PIII450) NAV was hogging the machine
at times whereas AVG fdoes not seem to use many resources. My question
is this; would there be any point in paying for AVG Professional (v7)?
That is, would the paid-for edition of AVG give me any advantages over
the free edition, such as greater safety, etc.?

There's not much point in using AVG regardless of the version.

I tried AVG Free version, then bought AVG 7.0.

Had it about 2 months then moved to Avast Pro (there is a free version). A
larger footprint than AVG, but not at large as Norton/symantec, Mcafee, etc.

Had no problems with it and it found some virues AVG didn't

THanks. I did try to trial Avast but got into difficulties with it and
OE. This is because it wanted to access incoming mail by modifying the
account name - no problem per se, but because I also use K9 to detect
spam (it's really good IME) and it already modifies the account name and
server I couldn't work out how to make both work at once. If someone can
point me in the right direction I'd be delighted to try out Avast as a
number of people have said it's better than AVG.

In case it helps someone to help me, for K9 to operate with OE, I have
to change the pop server to localhost, the account name to <pop server>/
<pop mail port>/<actual pop account name> and then change the incoming
pop port to 9999 - which K9 monitors. K9 then uses this information to
read emails before passing them on to OE. I found it impossible to get
Avast to work as well with this set up - if someone can tell me how to do
it I'll be most obliged.

Do you believe everything anybody says? Did avg keep you system clean sofar?

Anyway, F-Prot seems to be light on system resources also.

I agree. Everyone has there own opinions of AV software. I personally
really like AVG7. Infact I bought it yesterday.

I hated avast. I found it to be horribly designed and overly complex
to do simple things.

AVG7 for me is great. Well worth £23 for the 2 years of upgrades

thanks - obviously there will be different opinions. It seems to me that
I should go with whatever seems best for me. But my original question
still holds - what does AVG7 give me over and above AVG Free, apart from
the reasonable approach of paying for something I use?

I could be wrong but the main VISIBLE difference between the free version 6
and AVG 7 professional seems to be the use of the email scanner and more

free version is still version 6 or if there is both a free and trial version
of AVG7.

Anyway having used Mcafee , Norton and Avast and having toyed with Panda
Titanium I'll stick with AVG7 for now because it works well in the real
world.

Detection wise avg 7 is the same as 6.The email scanner in 7 is better as
mail is directed to a server to be scanned before it reaches you.Avg 6 just
scans the inbox folder after its arrived.If you have 98 you may find 7
consumes a lot more resources than 6.I found it not as stable on my 98 as
6.I would trial before buying, if you just wanted the scanner benefits.By
the way i use avast as a resident scanner on my system and avg 6 as on
demand and they work very well , but obviously i coulnt guarantee conflicts
on your system.

I am not fully aware of the difference. I don't think AVG6 has support
for The Bat! which I needed. Also the support is good as relying on
newsgroups and forums isnt a great idea. I like to be able to contact
the developers.

IME the developers have been very helpful and friendly and I have not
been treated as a "simlpton". There will always be someone with
something bad to say about a company. I own a Dell laptop and had
nothing but problems with it for the first 3 months so my opinion of
Dell is they are rubbish, etc, etc. however other people love them. It
just depends who you ask.

Uninstall whatever AV you have installed now and download AVG7 30 days

And how did you catch these viruses?

I've had some good advice here from a number of people - many thanks for
all your help.

Actually, although I may well go with AVG7 (trial first) I must say that
despite the drawbacks of AVG6 OE plugin (in that it scans an email after
it's already in the inbox) it is nice not to have to configure my (many)
different email accounts. With AVG7 I'll have to do that and try to get
that to work with K9 as well (which I think I've worked out - timer will
tell).

I run AVG 7 on my XP-pro machine, but I've tried it twice on the home PC
running 98SE but both times i've had unexplained freezes and reverted to 6.
I use an IMAP mail server on my mail email account, so the incoming mail
scan is irrelevant to me.
My advice, stick to 6 till you upgrade to XP.

If you use Outlook Express then AVG7 has a wizard built in to edit all
of your settings automatically. It has worked fine for me in tests (I
don't actually use OE for my e-mail) on Windows XP Pro SP1.

And I am sure there are some viruses that AVG will catch that other AV
will. I don't know of any AV that can detect every virus and I don't
think we will have one any time soon.
