Superantispyware free wants to charge?

Recently a family member who is still on dial up as broadband is not
available in her location, had problems with updating of AVG 8 free.
User interface would not appear.
Downloading fresh version to install takes for ever so I did it and put it
on
a CDR and sent it to her.
I also downloaded the latest versions of MBAM and SAS free and put them on
the CDR.

She reports :-

"Thanks for the disc all installed and up-to-date. Although after running
the
scan on super antispyware free edition it said I had 49 threats and wanted
me to connect to the internet, to fix them, so that's what I did and they
said ,give us money and we'll fix them for you?

I have run avg and scanned and all seems to be ok. Although when I bring up
the interface the screen still goes black and flashes a few times but then
it comes up, only the colours are distorted and the start bar at the bottom
of the screen changes to dark green with other mismarkings. It does update
however. just looks not quiet right, the pixels seem to be much bigger."



Seems odd that SAS free should ask for payment and I don't know what to make
of the screen oddities.
Perhaps there is still a nasty somewhere that explains the whole thing.
Am I missing something?
Meanwhile I'll tell her to install and run MBAM
It's a bit of a trek to visit

OS is XP Home fully updated.

Are you sure you have a ligitimate copy of the free SAS?
The SAS website still shows that SAS free will detect and remove at no cost.
Perhaps you dl'd the wrong version. The free version is on their homepage,
just above the paid version under the Popular Links header.
Are you sure she is not getting popups from 'anti 2009' something?
SAS does not charge, AFAIK.

The free version is 5.72 MB (6,006,816 bytes) and is called
SUPERAntiSpyware.exe.
The Pro version is 5.68 MB (5,956,640 bytes) and is called
SUPERAntiSpywarePro.exe.

Something is not kosher here.

Um, 49 threats. It didn't tell you WHAT type of threats they were?
Were they just cookies?

Uh huh. So just WHERE did you download this copy of SuperAntiSpyware?
You sure that you didn't download a trial Pro version?

They have their own forums (http://forums.superantispyware.com/) where
you could ask other users of the free version is the behavior you
noticed is normal for this product.

The free version does not ask for money to fix what it finds, I have the
free version installed on a WinME machine and it has never asked for money
even when finding and getting rid of tracking cookies or anything else it
may find, I also run 2 Pro versions, one on an XP machine and one on a Vista
machine but that is a one of payment that is made when first getting the
program and they don't ask for any more when cleaning what they find.

Sounds like she has Antispyware 2009 (or some variant), not SuperAntiSpyware
(SAS). Antispyware 2009 is MALWARE. Fortunately, SAS can remove it.

Thanks to all who replied.
You confirmed my belief that SAS free does not charge
Most suspect I got the wrong file as did I.
Not so however.
It came from the official web site and I'm pretty sure I took the free
version.
The installation file is called SUPERantispyware.exe and Windows Explorer
shows it as 5,867KB
Have SAS on my laptop and have now installed from above file to this
machine.
Everything looks the same so seems the file is kosher.
Ran a scan which found cookies and removed them without asking for payment.
So goodness knows what my daughter did or what messed up her situation.

As regards the threats, she didn't tell me what they were.
A later scan with AVG 8 free when installed found nothing.
Haven't heard results of a scan with MBAM yet.
I can see a trek coming up!
If ever I solve this I'll post again.
