Autoplay/Autorun does not work? Why does this happen to me?

If I insert a pre-made disc, like for a game, install disc, it will
recognize the disc and autorun/play.

Problem:Any disc that has been burned will not autoplay/autorun ever.
I have to insert the disc and the xplorer or go to my computer to see
the disc contents. I've checked all the autoplay/autorun options in
the world and nothing changes this.

I remember dvd/cd drives USED TO pop-up a new window showing the
contents of the disc, even if it were a burned disc.
I checked microsoft and did everything it said to check here.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330135

That was no help. I have searched Google using about 50 different
combinations of words/phrases for the last 2 days and have found no
help with this issue.

Can someone give me an idea of what is/isn't going on?

Wasn't there a security change by MS to stop this from happening? I
could be wrong, but I thought I had read somewhere where they feared
that programs could start automatically and cause problems? To stop
this they made a change in one of their updates.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

It said change it to 95 HEX, did that and no results
Value WAS 91 HEX.

What gives?

I am not talking about dvd's that are used to install programs or run
games, I am talking about putting in a DVD which has files on it [ones
I burned to it] and having a folder pop-up to display the contents.
The computer used to do this btw.
thanks

You do have an autorun.inf and an autorun.exe file on the root
directory of the disk ? The autorun.inf is the first file Windows
looks for, and it goes from there. Autorun.exe is just an obvious name
for the file called by autorun.inf.

turn off / remove smart start,, not needed

also if you are using a 'NON redbook compatable burn' autorun gets confused

Just hit [WIN + E] after you insert the DVD like the rest of us.

Sorry, all that made no sense. Please elaborate if possible.

add remove programs remove smart start

OR:

add remove nero/modify/uncheck smart start

OR:

MSCONFIG at start/run and GOTO: startup tab-uncheck smart starts executable

redbook is the standard for the creation of CD's. Has to do with file name
sizes -directory structure- lead in -out.etc.
If you stay with the 'Joliet standard', which is available to you in the burn properties
within nero, that will help. With the advent of the 'data' DVD's the standards need to be
changed to fit a wider range of file names and the huge directories that can evolve with a
data DVD.

ALSO if you installed nero's VIRTUAL DRIVE,(device manager/disk drives) get rid of that
also unless you definitely use it. Otherwise it controls the opticals and can cause weird
problems in some rigs.
