This is what I have been wondering.
I have been perfectly able, with a good firewall, spyware washers and
online and installed AV to maintain a secure and safe system. I was
probably going to disable the Security Centre when i had received and
installed SP2. This leaves me with just the bells and whistles of SP2.

I'm beginning to think i am being sort of railroaded into *having* to
install SP2 because I am told to by MS and others who have downloaded
it

The big question is: do we *have* to install SP2 over a secure system
which I'm confident I have. Or am I just being sold by the hype and
mass hysteria over the thing

Thanks for the info and link. Would be nice if MS had let users know
instead of having to guess what's going on.

Neither does a smart computer user ignore what MS offers to protect their
computers.

First, I never said "ignore." I said "A smart computer user doesn't have to
rely on MS."

Just look at corporations. Some will take as long as six months to install
a Service Pack on their machines.

MS has a long history of having to redo patches that they have previously
released, so a smart computer user doesn't just install any MicroBandaid
without waiting to see what problems others have with it.

That's fine, but a message telling about that with the download request
would have been helpful...
<snipped>
I permitted auto download to start a few days back, but the indicated
file size was huge and I'm on dial-up. After I logged off, nothing has
happened on subsequent log ons.
I understand this is to be available on cd, not sure if I want to
install it. I have all earlier updates, but my ultimate security is an
upto date image file.
If a user exits the system while an automatice download is in process,
does the update pick up when next logged on?
