Auto Update / SP2

Hi

I got the Auto Update pop-up for SP2. I clicked on it but nothing seemed to
happen. Now when I try to go to Windows Update site (URL I'm sent to is
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us) It
all seems a bit "different!"

The main centre window is clear (just plain white) the "Install Updates" tab
on the left is greyed out, as is "View installation history" and "Restore
hidden updates".

It no longer gives me the option to scan for updates either!

Also, the page seems to hang almost always!

The PC is virtually new and I'm sure it's since the auto-update window
popped up. I have my Updates set to "Notify but don't download" at the
moment.

I'm not too bothered about the SP2, but if it's there and I've been
"offered" it as a final release, it would be good to get.

....As I type the centre page on the auto-update site has now changed to a
"Page cannot be found" page, is this all because of DEMAND?

Any ideas appreciated.

Nik.

No. It is because MS can not be trusted to update your OS. Auto Update
just adds another layer of BS that can go wrong with patching your OS.

Download the IT install of SP2.

Take responsibliity for protecting your own computer. And nothing beats a
good firewall with a good AV program.

I think that what you got was the new version of windows update not sp2
itself. That has been slow to get out due to the huge numbers of folks who
have set automatic update.

This also happened to me yesterday a.m. I hit the "download" button and
nothing happened. Kind of unnerving considering all the negative stuff that
is being written about this sp and the problems it may cause your system.
Just thought I'd let people know this is happening to others. I really don't
think I need it as I have a Zone Labs firewall and update virus defs every
time they are available (anymore about daily) but am going to install anyway.
Thanks. 39Pat

Whatever has happened, I restored to 3 weeks ago and I still can't get into
the Auto update site. It just freezes/stops responding and will not offer me
the option to scan for updates!

Any ideas guys??

Thx.

Nik.

Same here. Auto update popped up this morning again and I clicked to
download it, nothing happened. Cant get to a sight that will manually
download it. I think they must have pulled the package because of problems
like they usually have.

Do you now have the problem where you can't now go to the Microsoft Update
site and it fails to scan your pc?

That article was dated 17th Aug
Thats only for corporate XP pro customers. Some XP Home users like myself
were promised the update this wednesday. It arrived but we couldn't download
it.
I'm still waiting for notification of it to appear again.

Don't be silly! See
http://news.com.com/Microsoft+delays+SP2+auto+update/2100-1016_3-5312747.html?tag=nefd.top

MS are delaying the roll out of SP2 via Autoupdate.

SP2 Auto Update for XP Home users has begun, moron.

Try comprehending what you read.

This is correct and by design.
There are two wait periods with Automatic Update.
The first when you select Download.
Then you need to wait because Microsoft daily limits the number of
SP-2 installations through Automatic Update.
It could be very soon or it could be days.
See FAQ #7:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

No, it is working correctly.
what happened is by design.
Microsoft is daily limiting the number of SP-2 downloads through
Automatic Update.
Once you click Update, you again need to wait for SP-2 to come to you.
The time could be short or days.
See FAQ #7:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

Think of it like this.
How many Windows XP computers are set to Automatic Update and do not
have SP-2?
What would happen if they all attempted to get SP-2 at the same time?
No business including Microsoft could take that short term surge.
The entire internet would have major problems and be unable to deliver
that much data at one time.

That's fine, but a message telling about that with the download request
would have been helpful...

Jupiter,

You've been unfailingly helpful, on this, and on many other issues,
and your advice has helped me immeasurably make better use of my
computer. So please do not take the following comments as in any way
directed at you.

I have no doubt that what you describe is in fact what is happening
with these varied attempts to get SP2. What is NOT happening, and is a
huge failure of communication from Microsoft, is notification to the
consumer of exactly what is happening!

There is not even minimal communication from Microsoft once this
process is initiated.

Once the user has elected to accept SP2, the very least that Microsoft
should do is respond with SOMETHING. Perhaps simply a response that
says "Windows Update has received your request. Updates will progress
from an automatically generated queue. You will be notified when
actual download begins, and a progress window will be available to
you."

(in other words, " we got your message guys. You'll be hearing from
us...")

Does that sound unreasonable? I think not. Just a quick glance at
these forums tells you that people, obviously intelligent and rational
people, are at minimum confused.

Instead, we get a basic Microsoft arrogance that says, in effect, "Do
what we tell you to do, and just trust us." (forgive me, but I don't!)

(and places a gigantic burden on you and your MVP friends)

I also think the urgency placed on this update should be taken with
more than a grain of salt.

Personally, I have decided to definitely wait for the CD. Besides not
wanting to tie up my dial-up for endless hours, I want to have a disc
on hand in the event a re-install is ever necessary. I have already
once had to do a Repair Reinstall. The re-download and reinstall of
SP1 and all other updates to that point was what seemed like
interminable hours.

SP2 is essentially aimed at security issues. In my opinion, if, like
me, one has been dilligent in maintaining security with currently
available tools, the necessity to rush into SP2 is voided. After
following threads here and elsewhere on SP2 problems, I see no problem
in waiting. I do, however, see that many people are having problems
post SP2.

And I am assuming, possibly wishfully thinking, that the CD install
will provide actual information and feedback during installation.

(I hope this has not come across as a rant.)

Thanks again for your unfailing and steadfast help on this and on many
other issue. When scanning the groups for subjects which may apply to
some issue I am dealing with I usually look first four your ID in the
Author column.

This is what I have been wondering.
I have been perfectly able, with a good firewall, spyware washers and online
and installed AV to maintain a secure and safe system. I was probably going
to disable the Security Centre when i had received and installed SP2. This
leaves me with just the bells and whistles of SP2.

I'm beginning to think i am being sort of railroaded into *having* to
install SP2 because I am told to by MS and others who have downloaded it

The big question is: do we *have* to install SP2 over a secure system which
I'm confident I have. Or am I just being sold by the hype and mass hysteria
over the thing
