Connecting to Auto update site

Hi

I got the Auto Update pop-up for SP2. I clicked on it but nothing seemed to
happen. Now when I try to go to Windows Update site (URL I'm sent to is
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us) It
all seems a bit "different!"

The main centre window is clear (just plain white) the "Install Updates" tab
on the left is greyed out, as is "View installation history" and "Restore
hidden updates".

It no longer gives me the option to scan for updates either!

Also, the page seems to hang almost always!

The PC is virtually new and I'm sure it's since the auto-update window
popped up. I have my Updates set to "Notify but don't download" at the
moment.

I'm not too bothered about the SP2, but if it's there and I've been
"offered" it as a final release, it would be good to get.

....As I type the centre page on the auto-update site has now changed to a
"Page cannot be found" page, is this all because of DEMAND?

Any ideas appreciated.

Nik.

When you go to the main WU page, Install Updates is greyed out anyway. This
is normal, as is "View Installation history" and "Restore hidden updates".
You should see at the main WU page, the option to either do an "Express
Install" or a "Custom Install". Express Install scans your system but only
displays the critical updates that you need. Custom Install scans your
system and displays updates which are either deemed Critical, Optional, or
updates for your device drivers. You can also have WU display updates which
are in their Beta stages but I do not reccommend that you do this.
Installing beta versions of updates for your OS can potentially have VERY
SERIOUS AND DAMAGING consequences.
Also, the page seems to hang almost always!

If the page is hanging, be patient.

It is available as a final release now. It is under KB article number
835935.

Why can't I download updates?

If still no joy, Check your system for "hijackware":

Help with Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
