Audio Difficulties in MSN Messenger

I hope someone can help me. My sister and I just got webcams for Xmas so
that we can talk across the miles. I was installing and configuring them
today, and I got the video to work in both of them, but the audio can only be
heard through 1 pc and not the other, despite the fact that it says the audio
connection is established. Currently, both PCs are running through my home
network (since she's home visiting). We're using a Siemans router, MSN
Messenger 6.2. I've checked the hardware to make sure it works, and the mics
on both pcs work,so that's not the problem. I've tried turning the
firewalls off temporarily to see if that would help. Incidently, we're both
running Windows XP, one home edition, one professional. They both meet the
hardware requirements. I'm at a loss. Can anyone please help. She's
leaving in a few days, and we have to get this fixed. Thanks in advance.

Not too sure, but you need to make sure that the mic is connected to the
sound card and the system is configured correctly. If the webcams have a
mic, DO NOT USE THAT, use a real mic like I said connected to the sound
card.

If you do not know how to make sure the system is configured correctly,
repost and some one will tell you.

Thanks for the input Joel. One camera is a Creative Live! and has a separate
mike, which actually was the one we could hear. The other is a Logitech
Orbit with a built-in mike, which we couldn't hear. So I thought maybe your
suggestion would work. I hooked up a regular mike to the soundcard,
reconfigured the system to use that one, but it didn't.

Any other suggestions? :) This is starting to get a little frustrating.

You would need to re run the Wizard and make sure the proper mic is
selected.
Did you do that????

Greetings,

Firstly, if you or your contact are using a router (with UPnP support), you may need to
remove the current port forwardings. To do so (note this is for Windows XP exclusively),
click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the
"Internet Gateway" (should be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties.
Choose the Settings button, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete'
to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart
Messenger.

Also, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so,
click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try
again.

Hi,

Messenger has not used port 6901 for audio since MSN Messenger 3!!!

So does anyone know which port is used for audio? Windows Messenger 4.7
info would be nice - not video just audio port?

Hi Martin,

Ports 5004 through 65535 UDP.

Bugger - that may a bit hard with this router as each port to forward has to
be specified separately with a maximum of 20!!! Must be time to scream at
the manufacturer for a firmware update that supports UPnP!!!!

Cheers

Hi Martin,

Well just forwarding ports typically won't work anyway but yes, any large-scale router
manufacturers should be adopting UPnP by now.
