Audio on Windows Messenger/MSN Messenger

I've got a problem that is frustrating me because I can't find out where the
problem is.

My father and I used to be able to communicate by Messenger but we can't any
longer. I am on cable through a Linksys WRT54G router/wireless and he's on
DSL with a Linksys BEFSR41 four port router.

Both routers have current firmware and UPnP has been enabled both on the
routers and the PC's. I've made sure that software firewalls haven't been
the issue by turning them off, and even the built in Windows Firewall, but
still we're unable to connect with audio. The webcams work as well as remote
assistance, so it seems to be an audio issue. Has any body else run into
this problem, or have I overlooked something? The only time we can seem to
connect without any issue is if we're both connected directly to our modems,
which seems to be an unsafe method due to hackers and what not.

I should also add that we both tried using the same version of Messenger 6.2
and Windows Messenger 5 in all the settings I described below. We are both
Service Pack 1, (have not upgraded to SP 2)
