MSN Messenger 7.5 Audio Issues

Quick question: What Audio CODEC does MSN Messenger 7.5.0311 use?

Every time I start a video conference both the video and audio become slow
and choppy. As a result, I tried the webcam separately to rule out video
issue. The picture showed smoothly. When I added the audio part, both
picture and audio became choppy.

This never was an issue when our firm used previous versions of Messenger
(eg 6.0).

My computer guy looked at our network and he told me that it wasn't a
hardware issue or a router issue. Our firm uses a T1 connection.

I am assuming that it has something to do with the way Messenger
decompresses audio?

Any suggestions as to a workaround or a software fix?

Greetings Peter,

It can use a variety of codecs actually, including SIREN to G.722.1 to GSM 610 to G.711.
Depending on what the other client has available (only XP has SIREN for instance) and
bandwidth available, will decide what codec is in use.

Couple of things here. Firstly, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS Packet
Scheduler. To do so, click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view
click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then
reboot and try again.

Finally, if you're unable to establish a direct connection to your contact, Messenger will
now use a relay server. The relay server obviously has limited bandwidth and quality is
questionable when using this method.
