Thanks for your hint.
It simply sound too good to be true.

The KB-article/-fix does not help, however, on any of my four affected
systems {siiiigh}.

Rainald, I have no idea whom you are responding to.

I'm sorry for not having quoted from the message I replied to. Obviously
this was due to the fact that the quoting feature did not work.

As to be seen in the treeview mode the reply was directed to PA Bear's
posting of 30 Jun 2009 16:02:13 -0400,
Recent, related posts in this newsgroup /suggest/ that the fix for the
"cannot open attachments" behavior is an undocumented part of
MS09-019/KB969897 (i.e., the Cumulative Security Update for IE released
earlier this month).

I know for a fact that another IE8-specific bug was also fixed (and also
undocumented) in the same update.

YMMV.

The said security update is installed on my systems. It did not change
the situation with the bug.

What still is most mysterious is the fact that the bug appears in *some*
systems and other users can not reproduce he bug.
I have no idea why *I* get bitten in all of my machines.
This Monday I had to kill the OS in my main computer (one of my daily
used applications [written for Win '98) could not print anymore). I made
a fresh install if Vista Enterprise 32 German with SP1, applied SP2 and
then all available Updates and then installed IE8 from an earlier
download.
There was no Security/AntiVirus in the system (except the built-OneNote
Firewall and Defender).

It took less than a day and the bug was there.

Really strange as strange can be.

I was told by a friend, to do a restart...which is a pain having to do this
like 20 times a day!
I tried logging out of the Window mail, and after sign in..it did work 3 or
four times, then I had to go back to restart te entire system!

another friend that is going to school with cisco? whatever? said, there is
a rerouting problem and alignment of some kind, due to a distraction in the
....oh gosh, Im so confused..the "Block Set Piling"...or something like that.
He said my computer is infected with a missapplied programming software
download, and the original script will not work with the surfer pack or
service pack I believe that macrosoft developed/ as a bandaid for the first
applied original program! Whatever.

I have three dell desk box kind of computers, and I think they are too old.
Three years on one, and two on the others. He said there is a company that
will put in a new hard drive so the system will work better with microsfft
system controlls.
Please Please...I don't have money to do all this...but if I have to, I will
donate these computers to a school that works on them so that training may
help others that have these problems.

is there a better revised microware system I can buy and download
myself...or all I can do is take the threeback to a dell shoppe to have them
fix it. ???? Thaey should know, cause they build the computer, and put the
microsofgtware in them! Right??

You need to get a better set of friends because they are giving you
incorrect advice. :)

It would have been helpful if you had posted the error message you get
when you try to open an attachment. There are two different error
messages that indicate the problem is caused by a recent install of IE8:
either: "command failed to execute" or "file can not be found" (or similar).
One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
If you decide to uninstall IE8, follow these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Instead of uninstalling IE8, another option is to upgrade
your email program to Windows Live Mail:
http://download.live.com/wlmail

If your error message is different, let us know what it says.

You said "due to a distraction in the ...oh gosh, Im so confused..the "Block
Set Piling"...or something like that". You need to find someone that can
help you better. Someone with experience; not a student. Even if a student
is being trained by Cisco, they are not likely to have the experience to
help with things such as this.

If you can be specific about a problem, you are more likely to get help. In
this situation, you posted a suggested solution to a problem. Thank you for
trying to help. I hope that if it helps, that it is not ignored. It just
really helps a lot if someone with a potential solution can explain why it
works.

The more I try to figure all this out, the more confused I get. I don't even
know if I have IE8 or IE7 but until recently opened all my jpg mail
attachments and now I can't. I am not computer smart.

It's pretty easy to detect which version if IE you are running:
Just call "Help" (clocking in the "?" in the main menu) and select
"Info" from the context menu.

Donald, I don't see your problem report in this thread.
As always, describe your issue in detail, and include a verbatim
copy of any error message.
