Hi Didi

This generally occurs when you try and open a file and windows doesnt know
what program to open it with. What type of file are you trying to open? If
you right click the file and then left click on properties, it should tell
you the 'type of file' it is. Also, right below that it should give an option
to 'change' what program it opens with.

Do you have the application installed that's designed to
handle/open/execute to specific file formats of the attachments?

Didi,
When you double click on the file does it ever present an option of
opening the program using a web service or using a program? If so, select the
'program' option which then it will present you with a large amount of known
programs. Select Windows Media Player. Next theres going to be a small check
box below this list of programs that says something close to 'Always open
using this program'. Make sure that box is marked, then Click OK.

No, I can't double click on the file, makes no difference!!! let me try to
explain again.I'm trying to open an email attachment which I know is safe, so
click on attachment, then "do I want to open this file "which is "Type"
Windows Media (TM) movie, ok yes, then I get.... This file does not have a
program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association
in the Folder Options panel. So how do I perform this action, cos I haven't
got a clue??? Sorry if I'm not making sense but I've tried to explain as
best as I can! So how do I create an association in the Folder Options panel
to open this file??

To start, you need to know what extension it is so you can add it manually to
the list, because apparently the automatic method isnt working. Click on
Start, Click Run, type Control Folders. Click on the View tab. Apporox 11
lines down there is a check box that says 'Hide extensions of known file
types'. Make sure this is unmarked, then click apply, then OK.

Save the attachment to your computer and remember where you save it to. Now
go to the diretory that your saving it to, single click on it and you should
see the complete file name. Should be something like

NAMEOFFILE.XXX

You need to know what XXX is. Once you have XXX, click on start, run,
control folders again. Go to the file types tab. Click the New button. In the
new window type in your extension, then click OK. Find the extension within
the list, then in the bottom section, click the change button. A window will
appear mark the option 'Select the program from a list'. Click OK. Find the
program you want to open the file with, click it once, then below the box
there should be a check box that says 'Always use the select program to open
this kind of file'. Click the OK button. YOu should be able to open your
"attachment" now.

If you want, you can go back into Control Folders and mark that option to
hide extensions of know file types as it affects all files on your machine.
Some people dont like to see that.
