attachments saved to desktop

When I open an attachment received via e-mail, a copy of the file is being
saved to the desktop. I believe the file used to be saved to the temp
folder. This started happening within the past 2 or 3 weeks.

Any idea what setting or windows setting is causing this new behavior? Or
how to fix it?

thanks,

Try this:
Right-click on the shortcut you use to start Windows Mail.
Select Properties, change the "Start in" parameter to
%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Temp

What anti-virus application is installed and is it configured to scan
incoming and outgoing mail?

Perfect. That worked. The "Start in" parameter field was blank. Thank you
very much.

I'm using Avast but I have no idea if it is configured to scan incoming or
outgoing mail. I don't see anything related to that function in the
settings.

I did get it working properly by changing the "Start In" info per Gary's
instructions but I have no idea what is suddenly caused this problem.

oh, I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1.

It may not be causing a problem at the moment, but Avast's
email scanning module is known to cause trouble with WM eventually.
Your Avast antivirus was probably installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

I had to "unhide" the avast icon in the systray area in order to open the
correct section of the program. E-mail scanning was not turned on. I also
disabled the Outlook/exchange and Instant messaging modules while I was in
there. I left the P2P, Network shield and standard sheilds running.
Everything else has been terminated.

Had you disabled Avast prior to installing IE8?

No I did not. I forgot that I had it installed. The problem started at least
a month after IE8 was installed so I don't know if IE8 caused the problem.

Your fix of adding the info in the "Start In" field fixed the problem.

That's a good start, but it may not be sufficient to eliminate
all potential problems. Only the method I described does that.

I'll download a fresh copy of avast and reinstall it using your
instructions. Do I need the Web sheild or are the P2P, Network and standard
shields all that I need to install?

How about JPG and TXT-files?
Normally the fix you used does nit solve the problem for these file
types.
You might send yourself a mail with a TXT and a JPG attachment and try
it out.

I tested this out as suggested and no files were left on the desktop. I
guesss the "fix" works.

Rainald didn't mean to imply that TXT and JPG attachments would be left
on the desktop (especially after you implemented the fix I recommended).
It's just that some users, even with that fix, find that they can't open
TXT and JPG attachments within Windows Mail.

I have the same problem as Laura, but my "Start In" is not enabled to add any
data.
