Can't open attachments

I cannot open any attachments with incoming mail. If I save the attachment
to my desktop for instance I can then open it, but not from within mail
itself. Is there a fix for this yet. It is stupid to have to do this every
time you get an attachment.

Assuming it affects several different types of attachments, the most
likely cause is a recent install of IE8.
One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
Even without uninstalling IE8 you can make it work for all but TXT and
JPG attachments by doing the following:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the existing
value to %UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

If you decide to uninstall IE8 instead, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

If you don't want to do either of the above, another option is to upgrade
your email program to Windows Live Mail: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly. See
