server (win 2000 sp4) has become very unresponsive, takes ages opening apps,
won't allow me to stop services, takes an age to open add/remove and then
won't uninstall. problem stems from symantec av corp edition 9.00 lic due
for renewal but stopped updating 30 days before expiry cannot open sav mmc,
cannot uninstall app as it times out with error 'could not contact the server
in a timely fashion'. since then all apps have become very slow, client
requests are fine, but won't allow any work to be done on server. another
symptom windows update appears in toolbar and states downloading 0% but
nothing happens.... please help

I have a similar problem, I have posted far and wide and no one seems to
know what to do. I made my workstation the (winxp pro) the Primary Antivirus
server with System Center and that works fine, pushed out to all clients
easily, but the w2K server has similar problems to yours, never did get SAV
CE 9 installed on it, installation went bad so I aborted, now all the
problems and I have manually cleaned the registry following removal
instructions from Symantec. If you find an answer please let me know and I
will do the same for you

uninstall sav states server could not be contacted i will go back to symantec

Hi,
Problem started right after a "failed" install of SAV CE 9.0 server client.
I have since removed it all from the W2Kserver, but still the hang ups.
ZED500 response is what I will try next (sunday afternoon, so if I need to
reboot the server I can. I do have APC installed on the server (no cable
hooked up to the server though) But it has been in their fior a while. Maybe
SAV 9 triggered some unknown reaction or something wierd like that. I did
get Symantec Security center installed on my Workstaion , winxp pro, made it
the primary SAV server and it works fine, have 10 clients I am monitoring. I
can push out the Virus Defs easily also. I only wanted the w2k server to be
a client, so I tried to install the server client , that is when this fiasco
all began. I'll report back aftyer I try a few things sunday.
Thanks to you and Zed500

I had the exact same problem.. It IS because of the APC software.. It
has to do with being incompatible with the latest version of Sun Java I
think.. Go to their site, and download the latest version. Since
uninstalling the APC software was not doable in its state nor was
stopping services, I went to the
registry...HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services. Go to
the APC service(s) and change the key 'Start' to the value from 2 (which
is auto) to 3 (which is manual) or 1 (which is disabled).. Correct me if
I am wrong anyone... I changed it to 3... Reboot.. Uninstall APC.. All
fixed. Then reinstall the new APC..
