The machine is a P3, 1Ghz, 320MB Dell 4600 Dimension with Windows XP SP1.
The following error occurs at shutdown--

Event Category:None
Event ID: 26
Description: Application popup: msyrvs.exe - DLL Initialization Failed:
The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting
down.

Ad-aware by Lavasoft and Spybot adware programs were run. The system is
virus-free according to Norton 2005 AV.

Questions: What is msyrvs.exe and can it be safely removed? Any
suggestions what can be done to solve this problem? Do not want to install
SP2 until this problem is solved.

You need to use HijackThis and get rid of it.
If you search for "msyrvs.exe" using Google - you will find reference to the
removal.
