Hi.

The free news.sunsite.dk is throwing in the towel on Saturday,
news.aioe.org is slow and buggy, google groups (never!) and my ISP no
longer has it own newsfeed service; what is left of free newsservers, if
any ???

Any suggestions?

regards from vegard

The only "free" one I know of is TeraNews, which technically isn't free
because there's a $3.50 one-time fee to sign up.

There are no ideal solutions, but here are some to consider.

For READ-ONLY accounts (no posting), try http://www.readfreenews.com
(Okay for people who do a lot of reading and very little posting and
are willing to use Google Groups for those few posts.)
See also "Read-only public news servers" at
http://www.nyx.net/~bkraft/

Teranews.com offers free accounts with a 50MB/day limit, but there is
a small one-time setup fee.

Bubbanews.com also offers limited free accounts, but a valid credit
card number is required.

Yottanews.com offers a free account for 30 days, but currently has no
restriction on renewing it for another 30.

Test.news-service.com is sometimes available.

Finally, x-privat.org offers limited free access: 10MB/day at a slow
speed, and I believe they put a big advertisement footer on every
message you post.

If you get desperate, there are other web-based solutions besides
Google, some of which are free:

I gave up a few months ago and started to use googlegroups
web interface. It is a clumsy interface, but it is always
there and it works. Posted messages are shown immediately.

It also saves me the work of finding a good newsreader
and setting it up. Now I only need a web browser.

You need to set up a gmail account to get a newsgroups account,
but I already had started using gmail earlier, it is free, it
can be accessed via web or pop3, and it works well.

You can set the newsgroup access to be via web browser or
via email once a day if you like.

Vegard,
I have usenet access through my ISP, so I don't know if any of these
are worth looking at but anyway, you might want to try some of the ones
listed here:

I can't comment on the various merits -- like you, I use my ISP news
server (which is fine for text groups, which is all I use) -- but
whilst I strongly support freeware for programs, freeware for
*services* (like news groups) is a whole diffent kettle o' fish.

Thanks to all for their suggestions! :)
I'll check them it out. I'm considering a pay option
(news.individual.net) if that's the only way.

It's the only way and also the best way. The paltry $13 or so fee per year
is as free as it gets, and their service is superior.

Agreed... It's like $13 & some change in the US. My free ISP "Road
Runner" isn't worth a ****, but does have biaires.

Do you mean that you need a Gmail account to post messages to Usenet
via Google Groups? If so, this is not true. I use my Hotmail address.

Depends what groups you want, but this group, alt.comp.freeware, is still
available with sunsite-

<quote>

Starting October 15, 2005, dotsrc.org limits the provided groups to
global users to reflect our policy to support Open Source development. We
will therefore only provide groups which are Open Source related or which
can gain the developers of Open Source software. Furthermore the primary
language in the provided groups must be either English or Danish in order
for the dotsrc.org staff group to be able to handle abuse cases.

At the moment the following hierachies are covered as Open Source related
groups:

* alt.comp.*
* alt.os.*
* comp.*
* emacs.*
* fm.*
* gnu.*
* linux.*
* microsoft.*
* netscape.*
* opera.*
* redhat.*
* staroffice.*
* sunsite.*

If you miss any groups, which fullfill our criterion for an open source
related group, please inform us, and we will judge whether we will add
the group to our server or not.

I still have all my groups,about 40, here with Sunsite. I don't
understand what they have changed?

Outstanding! Both my ISP newsfeed and Teranews have been acting up
horribly the last month or so. Thanks for the tip! I really should
have used a throwaway email address, but I'm just glad to have a well
behaved newsfeed!
