analogue modem problems

upgraded to XP home from windows 98 and my internal 56k modem no longer
works. On connecting via dial-up connections I get the "opening port" message
which fails after 2 mins or so, with error 633 "the modem is already in use
or is not configured properly".
However I can successfully query the modem from diagnostics and can see the
port opening and closing. I can also use the modem as a fax suggesting that
there is nothing wrong with the drivers.
It seems to me more a port issue yet disabling the firewall doesn't produce
any results.
The modem is a SupraExpress 56i Pro and I can't find anything on the
internet specific to this problem.

Any suggestions as to what the problem is?

Either find drivers for that specific modem for the Windows XP operating
system or replace it with a new modem which will have the drivers you
need. You can buy a new modem for under $35usd. If you go that route,
uninstall the old modem first.
