After installing SP2, IE stopped working

I successfully installed SP2 on my Win/XP Pro laptop, but
after rebooting IE can not find any server. I get the
"Page not found" on every internet address I try. I
checked the security settings in the Internet
Options/Connections/Advanced tab as suggested, and
everything is as it should be there. Curiously, I can
still do a LiveUpdate from Norton Security -- just can't
get on the internet using Internet Explorer 6.0. (I do
have 128 bit encryption set.) I disabled the Windows
Firewall in favor of Norton Firewall, but still to no
avail. IE 6.0 works fine on my Win/XP Home edition
desktop, which was upgraded to SP2 and uses the same
router than the laptop is connected to. Any suggestions?

Please help.

Hi,
Same situation here, after SP2, no IE function.
Mozilla works fine. Norton update also. windows update
can't connect, etc. I've changed and rechanged, enabled
and disabled everything--no change. IE6 is dead. Ping is
correct, ipconfig is correct, yet no IE6.
Is this common, or perhaps with Norton Internet security
running?
I did disable virus scanning during the install.
Any ideas?

To "the dude",
Thanks very much for your reply, but I had already
verified this as well.

Rob,
I'm still debugging my original posted problem. But so
far this is what has worked for me:
1.) Uninstall the last applications you installed
(for example, Doom 3's version of DirectX).
2.) Uninstall SP2.
3.) Uninstall PestPatrol or any other automatic cookie and
pop-up blocker that has tried to fill in the gap
in Microsoft's technology prior to SP2.
4.) You should now find that IE 6.0 is working again.
5.) Next, disable and uninstall older than 2004 Norton
AntiVirus and Norton Systemworks.
6.) Disable Norton Firewall and reinstall SP2.
Windows Update currently claims its too overloaded to
install during normal work hours this week, so try it
tonight or in the early hours of the AM.
7.) Install the 2004 version of Norton AntiVirus
(and Norton Systemworks if using this) and then
run LiveUpdate TWICE to get the Norton WMI (Windows
Management Update), which allows SP2 to recognize
the Norton firewall and the Norton anti-virus protection.
Fortunately, Norton is offering a $0 upgrade of
both pieces of software if you buy at Fry's before
Thursday (9/2/2004).
8.) Get the latest DirectX security update from
Windows Update (not part of SP2).
9.) Reinstall PestPatrol, if desired.
10.) Reinstall Doom 3, but not the DirectX component,
if desired.
11.) Reinstall any other applications you had previously
removed.

I solved this problem myself as follows:

1.) Uninstall applications installed after
SP2 was installed, particularly those which
installed their own versions of DirectX.
2.) Uninstall any versions of Norton AntiVirus
prior to the 2004 version.
3.) Buy the Norton AntiVirus 2004 version.
4.) Uninstall SP2.
5.) IE 6.0 should now be working. Check that
it is.
6.) Install Norton AntiVirus 2004 version and
do LiveUpdate THREE times (rebooting between each)
to install the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation)
interface that lets SP2 recognize Norton's anti-virus
(and firewall if used).
7.) Install the security-patched version of DirectX
from Windows Update.
8.) Reinstall SP2 (may have to do after normal
work hours).
9.) Reboot and IE should now work in conjunction
with SP2. Moreover, the SP2 security center should
now recognize Norton's firewall and/or antivirus software.
10.) Reinstall applications uninstalled in 1 above,
but not their version of DirectX.

Thanks to all who offered their help.

I have successfully solved several SP2 IE problems by running system
file checker from a command prompt. I normally disable any apps running
except firewall and anti-virus when doing this. Start, Run command,
type: cmd...[enter]. The command window opens, type: sfc[space
here]/scannow...[enter]. Sit back for some time while sfc checks each
system file. Reboot when sfc finishes - it just goes away without
notice.
