Remember Passwords is not working on IE 6.0.2900.2180xpsp_sp2....

IE 6.0 does not remember passwords on XP Pro.

I have tried this with IE 6.0 with XP Pro stand alone, IE 6.0 with XP Pro
with a Win 2000 Server Domain, and with IE 6.0 with XP Pro with a Win 2003
SBS Server Domain. No luck in any of these cases.

I have checked Tools->Internet Options->Content->Autocomplete...
all options are checked. I tried unchecking, checking, exiting, rebooting,
and and other internet folk lore to make this work, jumping up and down three
times with no luck.

Nothing seems to work. It worked fine with a Win 2000 Pro desktop.

this problem is with all my clients sites since they have all upgraded to XP
Pro from Windows 2000 Pro and on new XP Pro installs.
IE 6.0 works on Win 2000 Pro, but not on XP Pro to remember passwords.

There are no error messages or pop-ups to indicate any problems. It just
never remembers and asks me each time I start IE for the password.

It "remembers" only while that IE window is open. When I launch another IE
6.0 window, it asks for the password again.

Hi,
See: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ProtectedStorage.htm

Also, I'm not sure that you're referring only to website logins. For
intranet and some other network logins, you may want to check this setting:
Internet Options> Security> Internet Zone> User Authentiation> try an option
other than "Prompt for user name and password."

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Don,

I was at a client's site earlier today. I should have mentioned that I
edited the registry and deleted the Protected Storage System Provider User
Keys.

Now in re-reading the instructions, I realize I did not shutdown and restart
the Protected Storage System Service as the article indicates. I did this
step, but not after I deleted the User Keys. It seems like the proper
sequence would be to shutdown the service, delete the user keys, and restart
the service. I am desparate, so I will try all combinations and permutations
to see if I can resolve this.

Thanks for the tip on intranet logins under security. I will give that a
try too. I have problems with both. I didn't realize they may be two
different things until you told me so.

I will give them a try and let you know how it turns out.

Wow!

OK Don you're awesome,

So I added http://companyweb to my Internet Options> Security>->Local
Intranet->Sites->Advanced

No other changes were needed. It appears that Autologon Local Intranet is
the default setting for "Medium-Low" which Local Internet is set to by
default.

Here is my question:

Since Windows 2003 SBS Server automatically set my home page to
http://companyweb/default.aspx
when I ran
http://<domainname>/connectcomputer
with why did it not set up my permissions?

Do I have something set wrong on my server?
Is there a way to setup IE automatically for all of the computers and users
using connectcomputer?

I don't want to have to do this for every user in the domain.... That would
take days...

Thanks Don,

Not only did you solve my problem,
You helped me to DEFINE my problem as a trusted vs. local security issue.
I didn't even realize remembering logins WERE different problems.

Two down, one to go. I will follow up with SBS to resolve automating
connectcomputer to recognize http://companyweb being as a local intranet site.

Thanks again.

Michael
