Administrative Tools

Unable to use Administrative Tools...

MMC cannot open the file C:\windows\system32\services.mmc
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an
mmc console, or was created by a later version of MMC.
This may also be because you do not have sufficient
rights to access the file.

One of the error messages is above. Everything looks
good, works in safe mode except wireless networking. I
tried to install Macromedia Studio and Adobe Photoshop
but all pieces didn't install so uninstalled. Not sure
if this has anything to do with it. Also, I believe
prior to the installs I couldn't do Windows Update which
still doesn't work. Thanks for your help.

Randy;
I don't beleive services.mmc exists.

Try these:
If you do not have the Run command, use Windows Key + R

Start | Run | control admintools | OK
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools

Services;
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK

Event Viewer;
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools

This solution brings up the admin tools but still receive
the same error, and you are right the extension is .msc,
sorry. What causes this error?

Wes, Their also is an issue using Windows Update and
trying to do a Search/Find command. I assume all are
related. Thanks, Randy

I don't understand either but, Searh/Find command and
windows update and admin tools work in Safe Mode but not
in normal boot mode?? I've updated xp pro and re
applied all updates, still same problem. Also did a scan
sfc i believe to restore settings and files. Thanks.

Wes, I removed admin priv from my user id and the error
messages all changed to what i would expect. So.. I
think there may be some kind of security or policy
problem. Even stranger is the searh/find command works
when i take off admin priv from my id. What would you
suggest I do? Thanks.

Randy;
I don't have any earthly idea. :-( Do you have XP Home or Pro?
If you have Pro, maybe you could go to gpedit.msc
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | OK
After you hit ENTER, you'll be greeted by gpedit, which lets you modify virtually
every feature in Windows XP without having to resort to regedit. Dig around and enjoy!

I hate to suggest it, but you might consider a Repair Install.
Don't rush to do this, just consider it.
For one thing you have to redo all Windows Updates. This may not be
a problem if you can't access WU any way.

I saw some where, but I can't find it, some thing about creating a new account
and then being able to transfer or take ownership of Documents and Settings.

I received the can't open gpedit.msc same error message
as when trying to use any *.msc. I believe this is a
security setting but not sure which one. Did do the
restore to original command which helped some.
