MMC cannot open file

I seem to have lost the Microsoft Management Console in my Vista Home Premium
edition. I get the following message when I try to open the Reliability &
Performance Monitor in Administrative tools:

"MMC cannot open file C:\windows\system32\performon.msc

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was
created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have
sufficient access rights to the file"

I am the administrator and it also happens when I try to open other folders.

Can anyone offer any advice please

Some of the MMC snap-ins are not available in the home versions of Vista,
but the Reliability and Performance Monitor should be available?

Go to Start and type perfmon and see if the Perfmon.exe file shows up in
the results. If it does, right click the file and select the Run As
Administrator option to open the program.

Let me know what happens.

Done as you suggested but perfmon does not show up. If I type in perfmon.exe
in the OPEN box in RUN and try to open as an administrator I get the same
message as before:

My computer is an ACER 5630 laptop that I bought in March with VISTA
pre-installed so I don't have the programme on disc.

I too am extremely frustrated to learn that MMC seems to be missing!?!? Now
that I've had my HP laptop for about a month I inevitably want to tweak some
finer settings, only to discover that none of my .msc files can be opened (in
most cases, don't even get an error message, it just does nothing). I also
checked my "Default Programs" and sure enough, under Set Associations this
file extension is correctly identified as Microsoft Common Console Document,
but the default application is "Unknown Application". I have searched high
and low and cannot find any way to download MMC for Vista. I am also running
Vista Home Premium.

Is the file C:\Windows\System32\mmc.exe (Microsoft Management Console) on
your computer? If so, using Set Associations, can you reset the association
for Microsoft Common Console Document to that file?

If the file is missing, try the System File Checker, by right-clicking on
Command Prompt (Start Menu\Programs\Accessories), and choosing Run as
Administrator. At the prompt, type:

sfc /scannow

Press enter on your keyboard. The scan may take awhile.

Definitely no mmc.exe in System32, however yesterday I did find an mmc.exe in
the following path:
C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-m..-management-console_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_0d3c891478b72de6

I did the file association to .msc and still no good, in fact when I tried
to launch the mmc.exe directly I got a pop up error "<path>mmc.exe is not a
valid win32 application" so I assume this is a legacy version of it from XP
or older that is just left over as part of the Vista image.

As for System File Checker, I do not have anything called that in my start
menu (also searched my C: and tried to execute sfc/scannow from the Run
Command (Win key-R)). I do however have System Information and System
Restore under System Tools in Accessories. System Information will open
fine, but System Restore prompts me to continue, I say yes, and get an error
messgae pop-up:
SearchProtocolhost.exe - Application Error
The exception unknown software exception (0xc06d007e) ocurred in the
application at location 0x772cb09e.

Type Command Prompt in the Start Search box of the Start Menu. Right-click
on the result, and choose Run as Administrator. At the prompt, type
(exactly as shown; note the space):

sfc /scannow

This launches System File Checker. It will use the mmc.exe file you saw
under C:\Windows\winsxs\ to repair your System32 folder. After the repair,
if necessary, you can reset the association for Microsoft Common Console
Document by pointing it to C:\Windows\System32\mmc.exe (do not point it to
the file under C:\Windows\winsxs\).

OK - did that and the result in the cmd prompt was "Windows Resoruce
Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." I still
have no mmc.exe in my System32 folder and cannot open an number of features
in Control Panel. I zipped the CBS log and it is approx 1.2 MB if there is a
way I can upload it, would it be useful to look at?

Rather than upload your entire log, try this. Open Command Prompt again
(use the shortcut in Start Menu\Programs\Accessories)
(Run as Administrator), and type:

cd desktop

Press Enter on your keyboard. Then type (or Copy and Paste) at the prompt:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Press Enter. Sfcdetails.txt should then appear on your Desktop. This will
glean the SFC info from your CBS log. Copy and paste the contents of
sfcdetails.txt in your reply to this post.

Hi

Have been away for a few days but on return I have had simlar problems to
Shawn. Have tried all Dean's suggestions. Am able to open the MMC console but
it was empty. Tried to add snap-ins from the Add/Remove snap-in list but once
added it would not allow me to Save them. Ran the system checker and here is

Press Enter. Sfcdetails.txt should then appear on your Desktop. This will
glean the SFC info from your CBS log. Copy and paste the contents of
sfcdetails.txt in your reply to this post.

This is not the same problem?

The OP is missing the MMC.exe file and cannot open MMC or any of the
associated programs. SFC is not able to repair or replace the associated
files.

What you are seeing is normal for the Home versions of Vista. Your CBS log
does not show any errors that were not fixed.

Oh OK.

Not sure I undestand all this - when I enter mmc.exe in RUN it opens a
window called Console1 - [Console Root] but it's empty. When I try to add
items to it like the Performance and Reliability Monitor and others it won't
let me save it.

In addition all the preinstalled gadgets have disappeared from the Sidebar
programme - it is completely empty. There is no listing for anything that was
originally installed and I know I haven't deleted them. I see that others in
the forum have had problems with this but not perhaps quite to the same
extent.

Sorry if this is not the right forum for these problems but I would really
appreciate any help.

I can't even download any Windows Updates as the window won't open in the
Control Panel!

Ditsham

The behavior you are seeing in the MMC component is by design for the Home
versions of Vista. You can run the Performance Monitor from there, but you
cannot add it to the Console.

To access these tools, you can click Start and type: Perfmon and press
ENTER. You can also go to Control Panel/Performance Information and Tools.
In the Task Pane, select Advanced Tools. Click open Reliability and
Performance Monitor. You can access both monitors from there.

I'm not sure what happened to your Gadgets? If you cannot right click the
Sidebar and select the Add Gadgets option, you can download/install the
gadgets at the following website.

For the Windows Update problem, post a message explaining the details of the
problem in the following discussion group.

As to your sidebar problem, try this:
Exit Windows Sidebar. If you have a settings.ini file under C:\Program
Files\Windows Sidebar\, rename it to settings.ini.old. Copy the following
into Notepad (between, but not including, the dashes):

Save the file as settings.ini. Move the new settings.ini file to the
C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar folder. Then Navigate to C:\Users\(Your
Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar, and just rename the
settings.ini found there to settings.ini.old. A new settings.ini file will
be created under this folder when you open Windows Sidebar.

All this should set your Sidebar back to the default state.

As to your MMC problem, try going to Control Panel\Administrative Tools,
right-click on Computer Management, and choose "Run as Administrator". On
Home Premium it should have Reliability and Performance Monitor under
"System Tools" (along with Task Scheduler, Event Viewer, Shared Folders, and
Device Manager). Under "Storage" it should have Disk Management. And under
"Services and Applications" it should have Services and WMI Control.
(Computer Management is also available if you right-click on Computer and
choose "Manage", but may not necessarily be run as Administrator).

The OP is missing the MMC.exe file and cannot open MMC or any of the
associated programs. SFC is not able to repair or replace the associated
files.

What you are seeing is normal for the Home versions of Vista. Your CBS
log
does not show any errors that were not fixed.

Thanks Guys for your replies.

I have done all as suggested but nothing works. The problem is that no
matter what I do I keep coming up against the original error message re MMC
cannot open file. For example I can get as far as Computer Management but if
I right click it to run as an Administrator I get the error message and
cannot proceed any further. This goes for all the
administrative/performance/maintenance type folders that I try to access
(even Parental Controls).

Would a restore put everything back to normal? Can't believe I'm the only
one with this problem.

Ditsham - you are not the only one with the problem. OK - a few things I've
done:
1. Control Panel\Adminsitrative Tools, right click Computer Management...I
do not have a "Run As Administrator" option. When I double click it, I get
an error message pop up saying "C:\Windows\System32\compmgmt.msc is not a
valid Win32 application". Since .msc files can only be opened by MMC, this
error is not surprising.

2. In my Start Menu, I type in perfmon and when I launch the Reliability and
Performance Monitor (also does not give option to Run as Admin) I get the
same error because once again, it is a .msc file

3. As for Performance and Information Tools, when I launch this (either from
Start Menu or Control Panel) it actually opens but all I get is a blank page
with "The page failed to load."

So, I too am totally lost as to recovering my MMC file. Can you not just
send us the exe!!!!

Hi Shawn

Not sure what you mean by "Can you not just send us the exe!!!!"

This is not the same problem?

The OP is missing the MMC.exe file and cannot open MMC or any of the
associated programs. SFC is not able to repair or replace the associated
files.

What you are seeing is normal for the Home versions of Vista. Your CBS
log
does not show any errors that were not fixed.

Well, if I'm missing mmc.exe can you not just send me that file and I'll put
it into my system32 folder and reassociate the .msc file types to it and
perhaps things will work again?
