Actually a Question About Windows Server 2003

Jon

I hope this can be answered in this newsgroup even though it's a
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Question. I have installed the OS on an HP
DL580 server. I went to the Windows Update site and installed SP2. Now, I
cannot open anything in IE at all?? I have network connectivity. I can
ping IP and names so DNS is working due to name resolution. I can even ping
www.microsoft.com on the ineternet and get a response but IE will not
display any pages. I have set the security level as Low, turned off the
Firewall and checked some other settings but I cannot get to the internet.

What security setting was changed to cause this and how do I shut it
off? I want to finish installing the Security Updates then I need to
install SQL.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks -
Jon

What does IE show when you attempt to browse?
By default server installs with highly reduced function IE
config, and gives you a popup when you attempt to use it
that includes link for info on how to revert IE to less safe,
workstation-like behaviors (via add/remove programs).

First however, you need to tell us what IS happening,
not just what is not working. What do you see?

Thanks a lot for Replying to my inquiry Roger. Actually, I
just re-imaged the maching and did not install SP2 yet. I did install
everything else for security updates etc... from the Update site and it's
rocking right along. I am debating the install of SP2 now. If, when I do
install it and if I have issues with it again I will post to the proper
Group.

Thanks again -
Jon

Hi Jon,
After you have a checkpoint to return to, I would recommend
straightaway updating to IE 7 and then SP 2, all followed by
a check for patches.

Personally I would avoid using any version of IE on a server. The risks are
even greater than on a desktop. Get firefox instead, and on aserver,
preferably do not enable Java, Flash or Quicktime plugins either as these
have numerous vulnerabilities of their own, independent of the browser.

In actual practice I banish brower usage on servers that are for production.
