Now have brand new computer with clean install of XP SP2. Have gotten used to
working with Windows Explorer viewed in two panes, both as lists. My 4 year
old computer (Windows XP with SP2 added later) is set up that way, but I
cannot get there with the new one. Keep going into tools>folders options>view
to tell it to keep the folders withe the same look that I have set up. But,
upon revisiting, the folder opens with one pane (as a list....which I like)
and I have to click the "folders" icon on the tool bar to satisfy my needs.
Noticed options in Start properties, but I'm perplexed.
What am I missing? Or will the new XP SP2 keep me from accomplishing my goals?

AND, while I'm at it, I prefer a window to reopen in the same size that I
stetch it to originally.

Stretch the window to what ever size you want, then click File and then
Close. I should now reopen to the size it was when you closed it.

I'm not quite sure what you're wanting. Is part of it the two pane view
with the folder tree in the left pane? That can be obtained at any time
by using the icon's context menu (right click on the icon) and selecting
"Explore" instead of "Open".

When the icon is a shortcut (by default these would display with a
little arrow on one corner of the icon) the "Open" behavior can be
changed by editing the "Target:" field of the shortcut's properties. The
"Properties" pop-up is available on the shortcut's context menu. For

look at the examples with the /e switch.

Set the windows to the dimensions and view you want. Hold down the Shift key
and click the "red x" to close the window.

See if this helps:

1. Double-click "Control Panel" on the desktop.

2. Select "Folder Options".

3. When the "Folder Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the
"File Types" tab.

4. Wait until the "Registered File Types" view is populated.

5. Scroll down to "Folder" and click it. Be sure it is "Folder" and not
"File Folder".

6. Click the "Advanced" button.

7. An "Edit File Type" dialog box will appear. You should see at least
two options - "explore" and "open".

8. To hide the folder list/view when you open new folders in Explorer,
click "open" and then the button "Set Default". Likewise, to show the
folder list/view when you open new folders in Explorer, click "explore"
and then the button "Set Default".

9. Click "OK" on the dialog boxes to close them.

10. Close "My Computer", then re-open it, and you should see your
changes take affect.
