shortcuts in file-open are not visable

I work off of several network shares and in certain files that can be
multi-directories deep. To quickly get to my folders, I've created
shortcuts directly to those folders in "My Documents". So, from
Windows Explorer, I can go to My documents, click on shortcut to
"Project 1" and it will take me right to the folder on the share and
server where it is located.

But, in applications (word, excel, autocad, doesn't matter) if I go to
File - Open, or File - Save and I look in My Documents, those shorcuts
are not visable.

I have 2 computers, both have Windows XP, sp2, and on one computer,
when I do a file-open it works. On my new computer it does not. I
need to find the setting that will allow shortcuts to folders to be
visable when you do a file - Open or file - Save As.

It sounds to me like in the File > Open or Save As dialog box for
Word/Excel/Autocad you've got the "Files of type" field at the bottom set to
the application's own file type - eg, *.doc for Word. Change this with the
drop-down arrow to All Files (*.*) and you'll see your network shortcuts.

That works for File>open, but does not work for SaveAs. When you do a
save as you cannot change file type to "all files" you have to select
one.
There must be a reg key that controls this that has to do with the
shortcut as I have many machines that this works for and some that it
does not.

I've just checked the "Save As" dialog box in Word, PaintShop Pro and a few
other apps on my PC, and all that I tested showed and browsed okay to a
network drive shortcut I'd created on my Desktop (also in the File > Open
dialog).

NB: This didn't work for me initially because I'd set the shortcut with a
Target prefix of "explorer /e, " as I like that view. Until I removed that
text and left just the network path as the Target, neither Open nor Save As
worked properly (although the shortcut *was* visible within Open, when
switched to All File Types). Could it be that you've done something similar
with your shortcut? Have you tried recreating the shortcut?

In an Office app, you could try navigating to the folder on the network then
adding it to the "My Places" bar (from the "Tools" option in that dialog box
for Office 2003, not sure about other versions). For other apps, you might
get the same results with TweakUI or Google "windows places bar editor".
That'll help you get there more quickly, although admittedly only as a
workaround to your problem, not a fix for it.

Perhaps to do with account permissions on the different machines? Does the
shortcut work if you just double-click it in "My Documents" (ie not a dialog
box) on one of the problem machines whilst logged in as the same user?
