In my XP Pro SP2 system, under Network Connections when I have a wireless
adapter enabled, there's an option in the lefthand "Network Tasks" pane
called "View available wireless networks".

In a neighbour's system, which is XP Pro but (I think) does not have SP2
installed, the "View..." option is not present.

Does anyone know why this might be?

(I've tried to search the MS KB etc, but it's hard to search for named menu
items not being present - one tends to find problems describing how to use
those options, usually in the course of solving something else.)

Because his "Services" are differently configured.

Are they using windows to manage the wireless connection or third party
software?

The wireless adapter is newly installed (not done by me).

I'm not sure what, if any, software came with the wireless adapter. (I'll
have to ask who made the adapter and what model it is.)

I'm afraid I assumed that even if the vendor had supplied something, xp's
own facilities would still be present. Is that wrong?

Wireless adapters come with there own software which is usually installed by
default when the drivers for the adapter are installed. When that is done it
manages the adapter settings not Windows. In windows it's called Wireless
Zero Configuration.
To check this setting do the following:
Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
Click Network Connections.
In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then
click Change settings of this connection.
On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to configure
my wireless network settings check box.

To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then
click OK.
Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.

Based on that sig, and comparing posts I've seen from you with those from
most of the people you've listed (never heard of the fourth), I have to say
that YOU are the one whose posts I'll be ignoring.

And the noun is spelt "advice".
