This usually means you need to download and install this hotfix, with
Windows
Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other
folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or the 64-bit
version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common antivirus programs,
such as most of those from Norton or McAfee, tend to cause such
problems, although seldom immediately, so if you have such a program,
remember where to find the fix and hope that it will install again if you
need it again. A recent version of the Trend antivirus program also
causes assorted problems in Windows Mail.

It seldom helps to ask the same question twice on this newsgroup within a
few minutes, since it often takes longer to get an answer.

Download and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not running:

Try the Hotfix in this support file:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

This fix states a specific case but has been known to fix other mail
folders. Also, the present thinking is that the problem is caused by
various Antivirus software misbehaving. The fix may be needed again.

I am having the problem of unknown error when I try to empty my deleted
folder; is that the same problem you have? Have you figured out what to do
yet to delete messages from Deleted Folder?

I am computer illiterate. You mentioned the thunderbird email program. How
do I get it? Vista windows mail will not let me add contacts to my address
book which is a pain as I have to keep them elsewhere and type out each time.
An unknown error comes up when I try to add a sender. Do you know how to
solve this problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

See if this helps you add contacts to your address book (contacts) under
Windows Mail: Start Windows Mail. Click on Tools, then Windows
Contacts. In the large empty space in this new window below the toolbar,
right click, then click on Customize This Folder, then the triangle, then
Contacts, then Apply, then OK. If this does not make the New Contact
button appear in your Contacts window, close it and open it again. Now
you should be able to add new contacts if you want them.

can't send mail

No, I can't send any mail but can get mail. I called 2 places but get people
who can't speak English & are just trying to read instructions from a book as
they try to help me & end up saying it must be my computer.

Do you get any error messages?
Do you have messages stuck in the Outbox?
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.
