'A disk read error occured'

Any idea what could be wrong with my win xp when I try to boot up, after the
POST (a table showing all the resources allocation) a message appears
'A disk read error occured' Press Alt/Ctl/Del' to restart and when it
restarts, its back to the same situation. Has my Hdd gone bad?

It depends. If this happened out of the blue then it's probably
a disk error. If you did some partition manipulation then this
might be an indication that your chosen geometry settings
(cylinders/heads/sectors) is not in agreement with the way the
data is stored on your disk.

A number of things.

I corrected this very thing twice this past week just by opening up the
box (with power disconnected) disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive.

It's just a shot. It is also possible the drive has a problem.

I am now getting the same problem as this query. Given that I am not
technically very good, what do I have to do to fix this problem? I have tried
to run chkdsk but it keeps telling me the parameters are invalid.

HELP!

Do you have a disc in the "A" drive? If not, in any drive? You usually get
that message when the puter tries to boot up from something in it other than
the hard drive.

There is nothing in either the a: e: or f: drives and the system now refuses
to boot and when I try to boot from a Windows XP disc and try to repair the
installation it doesn't accept any of the CHKDSK parameters.

If I still run the CHKDSK command it tells me:

"The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems. "

It then returns to the C:\>

So now what do I do? The Microsoft website gives no clue!

If I received such a message, I would replace the disk.

Sounds like you might be in need of a new drive. Download drive diagnostic
utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web site. This will create a
bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the diagnostics to see about
the health of the drive.

Hopefully you have a backup of important data.
