a disk read error occured

every time i try to boot up the computer, I get the
message "a disk read error occured".
I tried pressing ctrl+alt+delete but the same thing
happens again. I also tried manually shutting down but it
still happens when i try to reboot this way also.
Any help?

Apparently your hard drive is failing. You can test the hard drive by
downloading (from another computer, of course) a diagnostic utility
from the drive mftr.'s website. You'll make a bootable floppy. Boot
with it and do the full drive test. If working with hardware isn't your
cuppa, take the machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a
BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) and have them do it for you. If you
need data rescue, they can also do that. If the hard drive is bad, you
will need to replace it, install an operating system (Windows XP),
device drivers, install programs from cd's, and restore your data from
backups.
