John

Hello,
I have a brand new computer with a fresh install of Win
XP and the latest IE installed but I can't see the
graphics on certain sites. I have tried every single
lead in the following solution that I researched here
first. Does anyone have a 'new' solution that may work?

This is what I tried (plus all of the links):

Hi Laura :)

Try the following and see if they help.

Red X Instead of Images - Can't see or save
Images/Pictures

Try clearing the IE cache.
I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and
delete offline content.)

also try

Right click on the graphic you see and a pop up menu
should appear. Select
"Show Picture" option.

Then, go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Show Pictures - check option if
unchecked to display pictures all the time.

or

Scroll down to this section at this link.:
I can't see JPG's or GIFS any more - red x - images
missing - fuzzy
images/distorted images

also try these

Hope this helps.

I can't see JPG's or GIFS any more - red x - images
missing - fuzzy images/distorted images

Fuzzy images - go to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main

Right Click in the right pane and select New DWORD.

Create the DWORD UseHR and set its data value to 1
(number one).

DPI screens")

Distorted images

There is a known problem with MS Patch 03-015 on some
machines running IE6 SP1 - a fix is available as
described at the URL below:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;q828682

Can't see JPG's or GIF's - red x - images missing

Go to IE tools/internet options/advanced/multimedia.
Ensure the option to show animations is turned on.

If you have just upgraded IE and you have Norton Internet
Security installed reset your Personal Firewall
Settings. If that doesn't work you will need to
uninstall and reinstall NIS. AdSubtract also causes a
problem.

Make sure your cache is not overfull or corrupt. Create
new IE data folders as per this link.

It has recently been noted that if IE is set to 'auto-
select' at view, encoding that some sites will not load
graphics. Set your system to western european (windows)
or western european (windows).

Refresh the page:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=837489

There are regular reports where people are unable to get
graphics back despite our best efforts. This may be
related to a corruption in the registry. The following is
taken from a relevant knowledge base article:

http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=283807:

"...If the problem [no graphics] is not resolved, a file
or registry key required to display the Web page with the
appropriate character set may be missing or damaged. To
resolve this problem, restore Windows from a complete
system backup or reinstall (or repair) Windows. If you
are running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition or
Microsoft Windows XP, you may be able to resolve this
issue without restoring or reinstalling Windows by using
the System Restore utility to return your computer to a
previous working state....

Note that in some cases you may also be able to resolve
this problem by manually editing the registry. For
example, if the 28591 String value is missing from the
following registry key, a Web page that is encoded for
the Western European (ISO) code page might not display
any images:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Co
dePage

The value for this registry key should be set to the name
of the appropriate code page file in your Windows\System
or Windows\System32 folder. For the Western European
(ISO) code page, this value should be either Cp_28591.nls
(Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition) or C_28591.NLS
(Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP). For
additional information about the character sets that are
supported by Internet Explorer, visit the following
Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/reference/charsets/charset4.asp
......"

I don't know about you, but that means absolutely nothing
to me. I suspect that a corruption within that key of
the registry could also lead to IE losing encoding
settings. So, if your encoding keeps changing, or you
continue to be unable to see graphics despite your best
efforts, I must repeat Microsoft's advice and ask you to
repair/reinstall Windows.

*IF* you are an experienced computer user, and *IF* you
are familiar with the registry I now have some txt files
that can be converted to reg files and imported into
Windows XP/NT4.0/2000 or Win98/ME. You must make sure
that the NLS file referred to exists on your computer
before importing the reg file.

Western European (ISO) encoding

Windows 98/ME

Windows XP/NT4.0/2000

Western European (Windows) encoding

Windows 98/ME

Windows XP/NT4.0/2000

PLEASE BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE IMPORTING THESE
FILES. Extract the txt files and change the file type
extension to reg before importing the files.

If the following registry key exists {1F48AA48-C53A-4E21-
85E7-AC7CC6B5FFA8} rename the DLL file to which the CSLID
points.

If the following registry keys exist, try exporting them
(just in case) and then delete the originals:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space
Handler\ftp
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space
Handler\http

If no joy, make sure your graphics are associated to
Internet Explorer:

Easy way (Doug Knox's script utility):

http://www.dougknox.com/utility/scripts_desc/fixpix.htm

Harder way:

Try running the following commands from start/run with
all programmes shut down:

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll (all versions) ... and then

regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll (with IE5 up)

If using WindowsME the command is:

regsvr32.exe /i thumbvw.dll

Press enter and reboot.

After a wait you will get a *succeeded* dialogue box
after each command. Click ok, reboot and see if things
are fixed.

But be warned, this resets a lot of file associations
back to the standard defaults, so some image viewer
programmes may complain - but that's an easy fix - you
can pick and choose your file associations later.

If still no luck, have a look at your Registry. Please,
back up your registry first, and if you are really
unsure, get someone who has a bit of experience to help
you out.

Open regedit.exe and navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (there is a dot before jpg)
For Content Type is should say "image/jpeg"
Do the same for .jpe and .jpeg

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif (don't forget the dot)
For Content Type is should say "image/gif"

Something to try:

Check the HOSTS file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

This is a text file. It contains the normal list of custom IP addresses
mapped from web addresses.

Some installed anti- ad/spy programs modify this file. Notorious is Ad-Aware
6.

Normally the file only contains one entry:

127.0.0.1 localhost

If it contains any other entries, like:

127.0.0.1 ads.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ads.msn.com

Then this could be your problem.

Eliminate all IP addresses except for that first "127.0.0.1 localhost"

Save the file and try web browsing.

You might also try changing you Security setting. Move it down 1 from here
it is now (i.e. If High, move to Med. If Med. set to Low) and see if that
helps.

Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/reference/charsets/charset4.asp
....."

I don't know about you, but that means absolutely nothing
to me. I suspect that a corruption within that key of
the registry could also lead to IE losing encoding
settings. So, if your encoding keeps changing, or you
continue to be unable to see graphics despite your best
efforts, I must repeat Microsoft's advice and ask you to
repair/reinstall Windows.

*IF* you are an experienced computer user, and *IF* you
are familiar with the registry I now have some txt files
that can be converted to reg files and imported into
Windows XP/NT4.0/2000 or Win98/ME. You must make sure
that the NLS file referred to exists on your computer
before importing the reg file.

Western European (ISO) encoding

Windows 98/ME

Windows XP/NT4.0/2000

Western European (Windows) encoding

Windows 98/ME

Windows XP/NT4.0/2000

PLEASE BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE IMPORTING THESE
FILES. Extract the txt files and change the file type
extension to reg before importing the files.

If the following registry key exists {1F48AA48-C53A-4E21-
85E7-AC7CC6B5FFA8} rename the DLL file to which the CSLID
points.

If the following registry keys exist, try exporting them
(just in case) and then delete the originals:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space
Handler\ftp
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space
Handler\http

If no joy, make sure your graphics are associated to
Internet Explorer:

Easy way (Doug Knox's script utility):

http://www.dougknox.com/utility/scripts_desc/fixpix.htm

Harder way:

Try running the following commands from start/run with
all programmes shut down:

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll (all versions) ... and then

regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll (with IE5 up)

If using WindowsME the command is:

regsvr32.exe /i thumbvw.dll

Press enter and reboot.

After a wait you will get a *succeeded* dialogue box
after each command. Click ok, reboot and see if things
are fixed.

But be warned, this resets a lot of file associations
back to the standard defaults, so some image viewer
programmes may complain - but that's an easy fix - you
can pick and choose your file associations later.

If still no luck, have a look at your Registry. Please,
back up your registry first, and if you are really
unsure, get someone who has a bit of experience to help
you out.

Open regedit.exe and navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (there is a dot before jpg)
For Content Type is should say "image/jpeg"
Do the same for .jpe and .jpeg

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif (don't forget the dot)
For Content Type is should say "image/gif"

Hi John :)

You might also try changing you Security setting. Move it down 1 from here
it is now (i.e. If High, move to Med. If Med. set to Low) and see if that
helps.

Hello,
I have a brand new computer with a fresh install of Win
XP and the latest IE installed but I can't see the
graphics on certain sites. I have tried every single
lead in the following solution that I researched here
first. Does anyone have a 'new' solution that may work?

This is what I tried (plus all of the links):

Hi Laura :)

Try the following and see if they help.

Red X Instead of Images - Can't see or save
Images/Pictures

Try clearing the IE cache.
I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and
delete offline content.)

also try

Right click on the graphic you see and a pop up menu
should appear. Select
"Show Picture" option.

Then, go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Show Pictures - check option if
unchecked to display pictures all the time.

or

Scroll down to this section at this link.:

Thanks but that didn't help. It was properly set up with
only that one entry already.

-----Original Message-----
Something to try:

Check the HOSTS file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

This is a text file. It contains the normal list of custom IP addresses
mapped from web addresses.

Some installed anti- ad/spy programs modify this file. Notorious is Ad-Aware
6.

Normally the file only contains one entry:

127.0.0.1 localhost

If it contains any other entries, like:

127.0.0.1 ads.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ads.msn.com

Then this could be your problem.

Eliminate all IP addresses except for that first "127.0.0.1 localhost"

Save the file and try web browsing.

Try running the following commands from start/run with

Press enter and reboot.

After a wait you will get a *succeeded* dialogue box

are fixed.

But be warned, this resets a lot of file associations
back to the standard defaults, so some image viewer
programmes may complain - but that's an easy fix - you
can pick and choose your file associations later.

If still no luck, have a look at your Registry. Please,
back up your registry first, and if you are really

you out.

Hi John :)

See if you have any luck in Safe Mode:

Reboot, hold down the Ctrl key until the black screen comes up. You will see
a list of choices, select Safe Mode, 3. Then Open IE and see if the
graphics are viewable that way.

or.............................

Try reinstalling your video drivers:

Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
Click on Device Manager
Find Display Monitor and click on the + next to it
Double click on the file listed

Here you will find the information on your video driver. Then go to the
website for mfg. of the video driver and look for the update to download and
install.

also...............

Try reducing hardware acceleration at control panel, display, settings,
advanced, performance. Move the slider to a lower setting and see if that
helps.

or..........

Perhaps another program ist causing the problem. Try disabling your firewall
and see if that helps. Maybe security-type program, toolbar, Yahoo
companion, download
manager, ad-blocker, etc.

or.................

It is possible that something in the install did not set up correctly, try
running a repair on your system.

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled before starting:

For XP Repair of IE -

Unlike the previous versions of the Windows program, the IE6 is a core part
of the XP program. A reinstall over the existing install can cause problems,
and there are specific instructions that can reduce the chance of such
problems. However, it is always much safer to do a repair instead of a
reinstall. A reinstall should only be done as the very last thing when all
else has failed. And then only according to the proper instructions.

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled, and follow all instructions
carefully

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

Courtesy of Robert Aldwinckle

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

or......................

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your XP CD handy
and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This will do
the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a lot more, that is find any corrupt
system files and replace them. It does not, however, re-register the
various software components (except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files from
certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To check for
this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter "qfecheck /v /l:c:\"
(without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck installed, it can be
obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on XP
(but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair if you
don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it works
there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might want to give
it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run without the
quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing IE6/OE6:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP (Q318378)

Here is a more recent suggestion I have been giving to XP users
who want to try some repair procedures.

<TITLE>831429 - Windows XP stops responding when you download updates from
Windows Update</TITLE>

It is actually a more comprehensive set of re-registrations than an
IE Repair with the default FixIE.inf would do for either NT5.

Although they are listed specifically for W2K they should apply
equally to XP.

Additionally, the information here may be of some assistance:

Hi John :)

You might also try changing you Security setting. Move it down 1
from here it is now (i.e. If High, move to Med. If Med. set to Low)
and see if that helps.

Hello,
I have a brand new computer with a fresh install of Win
XP and the latest IE installed but I can't see the
graphics on certain sites. I have tried every single
lead in the following solution that I researched here
first. Does anyone have a 'new' solution that may work?

This is what I tried (plus all of the links):

Hi Laura :)

Try the following and see if they help.

Red X Instead of Images - Can't see or save
Images/Pictures

Try clearing the IE cache.
I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and
delete offline content.)

also try

Right click on the graphic you see and a pop up menu
should appear. Select
"Show Picture" option.

Then, go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Show Pictures - check option if
unchecked to display pictures all the time.

or

Scroll down to this section at this link.:
I can't see JPG's or GIFS any more - red x - images
missing - fuzzy
images/distorted images

The value for this registry key should be set to the name
of the appropriate code page file in your Windows\System

John, when you say "Certain sites" I wonder if there's something other than
graphics at work here.

Do you know (or could you give a couple of links that do work and a couple
that don't) if these are sites with pictures in the HTML or whether they are
pages built by scripting.

Not sure when I'll get back here to look but it may help someone to answer.
