2GB Personal Folders.pst issue

I cannot receive emails into my Outlook 2000 and I think it is due to the
size of the personal folders.pst file (exceeded 2Gb). What can be done?

1. Empty the deleted items folder.
2. Delete old unwanted emails.
3. Remove attachments from emails and file them on your hard drive.
4. Archive mail items older than say 6 months. If you need access to them,
you can always open your archive file and access them.
5. Compact your existing PST.

Consider upgrading Outlook 2000 which is as close to obsolete as it can be
to Outlook 2003 at least. Its PST file has a much larger capacity.

Thanks Kathleen. Unfortunately, I have tried to do #1, #2, and I already do
#4 (not quite every 6 months) but I get an error message stating that the
file .../email.pst cannot be accessed. (because I cannot do #2, #3 is not
possible). I am not sure I know how to compact the .pst (winzip type?)

I have tried renaming the file, but I get the same error.

I also tried to use the scanpst.exe program on this file but it responds
with an error message. (I assume it is also due to the size of the .pst)

I am planning to upgrade, but will this allow me to use this larger file?

Thanks,

PW

Don't use Winzip, that will simply zip it making it useless to Outlook unless
you unzip it.

How to Manually Start PST Compaction (Outlook 2000):

On the Tools menu, click Services.
Click to select Personal Folders, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click Compact Now.
Click OK twice.

Hello PWilkiewicz

Korland has rightly defined the procedure to compact PST file which is over-sized. To repair 2GB PST file of MS Outlook 2000, you need to have outlook recovery tool.

Actually its a known issue of MS Outlook 2002 and its earlier versions where maximum file size of PST could be 2GB. But it is not the case in outlook 2003 and 2007; it has been set to 20GB now. If the outlook 2000 PST has freezed and is inaccessible then download the outlook repair software from http://www.kerneldatarecovery.com/pst-recovery.html

This software will repair the PST file, recover PST file contents and rebuild a healthy PST file. The new file then can be attached with user profile/imported and the mails becomes accessible again. Try out the free trial to know the features and functions.....

Microsoft Outlook 2002 and earlier versions limit the size of
Personal Folders (PST) file to 2GB. Whenever the PST file reaches or
exceeds that limit, you will not be able to open or load it any more,
or you cannot add any new data to it. This is called oversized PST
file problem. More detailed information can be found at
http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/2gb-pst.htm

You can use Advanced Outlook Repair to solve the problem, by either
converting it into Outlook 2003 format ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/convert-2gb-pst.htm
), or splitting it into smaller pieces ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/split-2gb-pst.htm
)

http://www.datanumen.com/aor/ contains the detailed information about
Advanced Outlook Repair.

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe
