XP Pro tries to install this modem as an Aztec of some
lind and fails! (Zoom modem (V.34) model 2915ZX8L1392 )

It's quite an old modem. No reason XP should do this.

Any ideas appreciated.

Most likely Windows is picking it up as an Aztec(most
likely an Actiontec) primarily because it most likely
uses an Aztec (Actiontec) chipset.
You need to obtain an XP driver from the Zoom website. If
they do not have a driver, purchase a new modem. Drivers
are the responsibility of the modem manufacturer.

Here is what Zoom has to say about your modem.
Go to this webpage:
http://www.zoomtel.com/techsprt/xpfiles.shtml

Now find this line:
Other Zoom V.34+/33.6K and Lower
and read what they have to say about your modem and XP.
