Zonealarm slowing down Internet Explorer

G

Graham Nash

I have free copy of Zonealarm(trial) running on Dell Lattitude. No
problem when it is turned off but when I turn it on there are some
delays before the page is loaded. I have DSL 768k and it is fast
without ZA. Sometimes when I am loading pages, it takes 5-10 seconds
for some pages to load, without ZA, BOOM. I have never had any
problems with my other laptop. I am using XP latest updates.

Please help

You might try un installing and re-installing ZA. I have never noticed
any slow down.

Zone Alarm is a piece of trash. Throw it away. Use XP's own firewall
instead. There really is no need to use a separate firewall. XP's firewall
stops the bad guys from getting in. A decent antivirus will kill all
Trojans. Extra firewalls are redundant.

You seem to be expressing an minority view. BTW my copy of Zone also
stops popups very nicely as well. It has never appeared to cause any
problems.

I think ZA is worth it instead of the built in firewall to keep programs
from phoning home without my permission. I've never experienced a
slowdown. You might try uninstalling and re-installing. You said this
happens sometimes. Could you post a llink of an example page?

I would NEVER recommend that anyone use the built in XP firewall. It is one
big piece of trash.

One gigantic failing of Windows XP firewall: it does not block out-going
ports.

I use Zone Alarm on all five of my personal computers and I put it on every
personal computer that I provide tech support for.

I've never experienced a slowdown.

My father-in-law has reported that his system bogs down on "free" Porno
sites. I suspect that ZA chokes while blocking the steady stream of Trojans
and Worms that those sites are trying to install onto his computer.

What can I say? He's 79 years old, 90% of his heart is gone, and he could
die at any moment from one of his other "serious" medical problems.

Then why does it work??

The built in firewall does work, it just does not have all the
protection and features that ZA has. The built in version is better than
nothing, but as noted it has some rather large holes.

Sorry but XP's own firewall only looks one direction and ZA free is every
bit as good as it in that direction. The fact that it looks both ways makes
it much better.

ZA free doesn't handle ICS setup unfortunately. You need to buy PRO version
for that. There is one drawback with ZA free that doesn't happen with the XP
firewall at least.

Absolute hogwash. If nothing gets in you don't have to worry about whats going
out. XP's firewall is all thats needed.

You are right. You are absolute hogwash.

Obviously you know nothing about web bugs, spyware, viruses, trojans etc,
all that phone home and can get in easily. Suggest you learn before opening
your keyboard next time.
