Zonealarm free edition seems to have suddenly forgotten all the program
control entries and is asking for them all over again? I don't recall
this ever happening before.
Can anyone comment?

Is it possible that you just updated to the new version? ZoneAlarm gives
you a choice of keeping your old settings or resetting everything when
you update.

No I haven't updated to a new version for a little while. It does seem
as if it has set everything to default values as some of the settings
are also different, which would indicate an upgrade, I agree. Very odd.

I don't think you're alone with this issue. I have ZA Pro on one of my
computers, and have just upgraded to the latest version. Given the
choice of preserving the existing settings or resetting to the defaults,
I elected to preserve. It ignored me, and reset everything anyway.
After a full day last weekend fixing it, I'm just about back to where
I was pre-upgrade :-((

I actually use Pro now, but even with free edition ZA will often re-ask
for permissions after you have a hard shut down for some reason. Not sure
if it's a built-in feature or some trigger in the Windows system that
causes that. Also, back in the ZAfree days, sometimes when Windows would
run a series of updates, especially with WinXP (not so much with Win9x,
as I recall) it just may be prudent to do a complete uninstall of ZA and
then either re-install your favorite vintage version, or update if you're
so inclined, and then re-visit all the permissions again. Every year or
so I just strip out all my old ZA files, reinstall fresh, and then go
back through all the settings again. Seems to resolve all ancillary
problems associated with ZA including vsmon's load-up speed on boot.

Good luck.

Have a great day!

I've had that happen on a couple of occassions (win98SE +current ZA free)
One of these was after a crash - while the system was playing up ZA had
created a exceptionally large debug log and then fallen over. The crash
probably caused ZA's settings file to be corrupted.

I also once found Internet Explorer's setting in ZA had changed to block and
I'm fairly sure I didn't change it as I still use IE as my main browser.

Did you delete files from the Internet Logs directory? That is where
the database is stored.

Both Free and Pro versions ALWAYS forgot for me. In the end I ditched it
and now use Kerio Personal Firewall instead -- does the same job + more,
and DOESN'T FORGET PERMISSIONS! :)
