Zone Alarm Free 7.0.337 - Beware

What service was that? Just curious.. :)

With the earlier free versions you can authorize a program
automatically to go on the internet even if you have "locked" the
internet. The option was not available on a later version that I
downloaded so I went back to the older one.

ROFL! Again, note that these services are provided by "svchost.exe"

Yep, but the more things "svchost" is doing the more resources it
takes. And give ONE good reason for running services you don't use?

The cleaner a system is the better is my experience.

Of course one have to know what is needed and what is not.

I'm not really interested in your stand-alone home computer since this
does not apply to all participants of this newsgroup.

Not everything is general. A computer must be setup to the environment
you use. Why run wireless control servicew, server service, workgroup
on a home machine not having need for any. There are lots of those too
Bad enough to mess around with productive systems since you're
apparently not aware of possible consequences. EOD.

I am. Things work completly right. I firewall is NOT needed for thing
to work right. We have it disabled at work (as standard, I like to
turn it on to protect against the other PCs on the "inside" of the
outer firewall). There are also lots of docs on this on the net.

Although it can make sense to disable unused services due to security
reasons (eg. Telnet service), to disable Windows services in order to
improve the system performance as you've suggested is plain nonsense.
Period and EOD.

I'm going to re-verify the latest version. Since I originally posted that
warning Checkpoint has changed their download page to include an
option called "I only want Basic Zone Alarm Protection". It's possible
I may have gotten a "Suite" package, but I went back and checked
the download module and it was supposedly the "Free" Zone Alarm.
The size closely matched the previous free Zone Alarm.
Whatever it was, it definitely added Spam filtering because it messed
with my OE/Outlook folders.

I have it in V/6.5 pro and you canturnitoffand on when wanted. It's in
the "E-Mail Protection" setting and is called "JunkEmailFilter". Do you
have the "E-Mail Protection" section?

I have the free version of ZA and there's no option to turn off the
Junk Email Filter. I've seen screenshots of the "E-Mail Protection"
page with 3 on/off options (the bottom one is for the Junk Email
Filter) but on my version there is only 1 on/off option.

It seems pretty sleezy that ZA would add a feature that could only be
turned off if you buy their product. It's a little like extortion.

(Yes, I realize that I'm mooching off them by using the free version
but they make it freely available so I'm comfortable with using it.
If this is their way of making the free version less attractive, it
seems pretty odd: "buy our product so you can turn off the parts of
it you don't like" is not your typical pitch)

Is there any wayto turn this off that I'm missing or are my only
choices to paym suffer the annoyance, or uninstall the program?

There is a fix. One is explained at
http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=gen&message.id=41947

But, that only turns off the mail span function. It does not uninstall
MailFrontier which ZA has installed without your permission. To uninstall
MailFrontier read how to at
http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=gen&message.id=42348

Another alternative is to uninstall ZA version 7 and go back to the earlier
one. Ver 7 has all sorts of other problems.

Hope that helps.
