I'm now running Zone Alarm, what is the procedure to completely
uninstall the Windows built in firewall?

Is this done just through the Windows security center?

Hi

The XP Firewall can be disabled via the Security Center. Click on 'Windows
Firewall' at the bottom of the Security Center screen.

I would say it's better just to leave it. The Windows FW is built right
into the OS and screwing with it trying to delete it will only cause you
problems

Yes. Just disable it (if it's running). No need to try to
uninstall it.

I agree. The new smarter Windows firewall knows that you have Zone Alarm and
will shut itself off when you run ZA.

There are reports in other newsgroups that the latest version (5.01.003.000)
has screwed some stuff up (including proper functionality of system
restore). Apparently--so the message goes--zonelabs acknowledges the problem
but hasn't as yet posted a patch.

"Other newsgroups" are wrong. Running that version of ZA Pro here and no
problems.

You don't uninstall it. You just disable it.

Latest ZA is 5.1.033. SR appears to be OK - restored to last night's
point without trouble

I don't believe this is true, I have ZA and recently
upgraded to SP2 which included the firewall, it didn't
recognize ZA in fact I had a problem getting the built in
firewall to shut down, with za running, I finally got it,
but it was some work to do so, far from automatic.

If you are running the latest Zone Alarm (5.1.xxx), SP2 will recognize
it fine and shut off the Windows Firewall.

Yeah it isn't exactly as that other person said. It is ZA that turns the XP
firewall off, not that the XP one turns itself off.

No - ZA turns the XP firewall off.

I'd be inclined to turn it back on and run both. Many, including myself,
run both without any conflicts or problems.

If you turn the XPSP2 firewall back ON and ZA isn't running at the time, the
moment ZA comes on, it turns XPSP2 firewall OFF.

If you have ZA running then turn on the XPSP2 firewall, it stops TrueVector
(I think it is) running in ZA and you get no alert that it has stopped
running thus ZA isn't working properly and may allow things to go through
that it otherwise wouldn't.

So, though I preferred to have the XPSP1 firewall ON while running ZA Pro at
the same time, it isn't something you should be doing under XPSP2.

Thanks. I appreciate the heads up!
