Zip Folder Invalid or Corrupted

Have jsut re installed xp on brand new laptop and cannot download zip files:
Receive error message: "Compressed (zipped) folder invalid or Corrupted" .
Have viewed threads that tell me how to open files by longer process but
should this be happening on new computer?...I am new to pc's

If you have "just reinstalled" XP on a brand new laptop, you must be
screwing up the works some place. Download ZIP files from where, in
your email or the Web? ZIP files are like any other files to download, the
problem is usually on how to open/unzip them. You can use WinZip to open
them.

many thanks...but too many issues were going on and manufacturer gave me a
new computer.wish me luck.
