ZA up-date??

N

Nel

Hi again,
Same problem. Maybe someone can tell me what to do.
Still get the pop-up from ZA about an up-date. I try running through it. I
must be doing something wrong...

Where it says Select the directory where ZA files are to be installed, I
leave it at: C\programs files zone lab\zone alarm.
Next I click 'Clean install'.Next:
'Security check from zone lab
Security Engine if you are uninstalling or up-grading zone lab product or
changing the load at start up option...click YES. then I get:
Set up is unable to shut down the True Vector service can't continue without
shutting down True Vector.
I'm completely lost....
Can someone please tell me what I'm clicking wrong or what is
happening.....
Thank you so much. This has been bugging me for weeks.....Nel

Sounds like you need to turn off ZA before it will allow writhing to its
internal components. Try shutting it down via the task bar icon, and
then running the update. If it won't die that way, try to salute* the
running process [vsmon.exe].
Other option is to kill the run value in the registry, and reboot.

*salute - as in three finger salute [ctrl+alt+del]

Hmm, very strange... I've never had that error come up during an upgrade,
ever, but if all else fails simply disable ZA and try agaion. Right click
the ZA icon on the toolbar and select "Shutdown ZoneAlarm". Answer any
other warning messages appropriately.

If this odesn't work, try uninstalling ZA from the Control Panel ->
Add/Remove Programs, then reboot and run install again. You shouldn't need
to enter a s/n again as it should 'remember' that, but just in case you
could write it down from the Product Info tab of ZA first.

It sounds like ZA has a glitch in your installation, or is clashing with
something, so perhaps the uninstall and install the new version would work
best - clear out everything and start again. But I must say again that in
all the years I've been using ZA I have never had this problem with an
upgrade, so don't give up on ZA just yet! Try the above and see how it goes
first!

Cheers

Hi,
Could it be clashing with Norton's Anti virus, since I do believe it has a
fire wall
I'm really afraid to fool with the Registry. (that can be dangerous when
you don't know what you're doing, like me)) I'll try shutting down ZA
before I install next time....
Thanks guys........Nel

Well, anything is possible! Have you disabled the firewall in Norton?

There's no need to play with the registry - just use 'Add or Remove
Programs' from your Control Panel - Windows will safely remove the programme
(well, enough of it to stop the problems) and make any changes, you don't
need to do it yourself manually.

Don't wait until the 'update now' icon comes up, if you've downloaded the
updated file before it will be on your harddrive somewhere. Which version
are you running - ZA Free or Pro?? Seeing as you've had problems for a
while and probably haven't updated recently I'd be doing it straight away
rather than waiting. If you're not sure where the file is, let me know
which version you run and I'll tell you the filename, then you can do a
search on your computer to find the file that downloaded.

If you didn't download the latest file, go to ZA's website and get it, then
follow the previous instructions. Hopefully that will solve your problems.

Hi,
Well, when I shut down from the sys tray after the pop up, the pop up went
away too. So I rebooted.
I'm running the free version....
Thanks....Nel

OK - first thing to do here is get hold of the latest version, the filename
of the latest release free version is zlsSetup_55_062_004.exe If you
haven't already downloaded it onto your hard drive, you can download it from
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zaskulist_download

So, download or find that file, then turn off ZA from your tool bar, then
run the above file (choose Start -> Run -> use Browse to locate the file.
(Don't re-boot after turning off and before installing the new version
otherwise it will reactivate its-self again).

IF you get the same error as before, then go to Control Panel -> Add or
Remove Programs, scroll down to Zone Alarm and click the 'Change/Remove'
button, then select the appropriate options as they appear to uninstall Zone
Alarm, then re-boot and run the new file as detailed above.

This should solve your problems, except that you will have to reconfigure ZA
to work with your programs again!!! Try that ASAP and let us know if you
were successful.

Hey, Martin,
I think we did it. I ran through it again, as it was the first thing that
came up when I turned the PC on and I clicked on 'Clean' this time and I got
lot of different pages, and don't know exactly how it happened, I clicked NO
in one place that I had been clicking YES. It said if you are up-grading and
etc. to click yes, and I guess that should have been NO. Up-date is
different for up-grading and I got it wrong. Haven't had the pop-up today.
So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. They said the update was installed but I
had a hard time getting rid of them, wanting me to subscribe to Pro, but
they finally gave it up....
Thanks for all your help...(I may be baaack:blush:)

Well, see how it goes. If ZA is running there is one warning that comes up
and asks you to confirm that you are upgrading by clicking YES, that is
mainly to ensure that it isn't a virus or something trying to reconfigure
ZA, so you do need to click yes to that one.... Anyway, as I said if all
else fails, turn off OR uninstall ZA and then install the new file. If you
turn it off, don't reboot but if you uninstall you will need to reboot.

Yeah, the free version can be a pain trying to sell you Pro, etc, but in
general it's pretty good after that. To make sure you have the current
version installed, just double-click the ZA icon on the tool bar, then click
the "Product Info" tab and look at what version number it shows. It should
show version 5.5.062.004, if it is something less than this then you still
haven't installed the latest - go back to my last post and follow the
instructions again. If it does show 5.5.062.004 or later, the congrats!!!

Hope all goes well - but if not, come back by all means!! Good luck.. (we
were all inexperienced or unsure at one stage)

Cheers
