You guys keep recommending Spybot - which don't work with XP Home!!!!

## I've uninstalled and reinstalled Spybot several times now. The Update
does not work and there is useless information on their website. The below
is C&P from the Sypbot website. When I try to update it "stops responding"
locks up and we have to close the program.

The main reason for this problem is that you need to use a proxy server to
access the internet. In that case, the proxy server is already set up in
your browser, where you can look up it's settings and enter them into
Spybot-S&D.

## There is NOWHERE to enter them *in Spybot!* And no helpfiles on the
website to *find* anywhere to add them! Where are they added?

In Internet Explorer, see the Menu Extras - Internet options, go to the tab
Connections and click the Settings button at the bottom.

## What address and port should be entered there? Spybot doesn't say or
explain!!!!

Back inside Spybot-S&D you need to go to the settings page,

## WHERE is the setting PAGE inside Spybot????? Their helpfiles do not
explain how to get inside this page.

and scroll down to the entry Automation - Web update -

## The web-update LOCKS up and stops responding when we try to get an
update.

Use proxy. Now check the box below it, and a dialog will appear where you
can enter your proxy settings.

## WHAT proxy settings? Where do we get them from????

The format is host:port (the host is the name, the port the number you found
in your browser). If you need to access your proxy using a login, you can
use the format username:password@host:port.

## Is there any way this can be explained where we can understand this????

Thanks

I'm using Spybot 1.2 and I didn't have to enter any proxy info...install as
any other program and it did the rest. No problems at all.

I've installed & run Spybot on multiple computers running XP and never had
the problems you're describing. For that matter, I've never bothered to
configure anything. Just install it, let it use the defaults, update, and
run.

When you say that you have to use a proxy server, are you saying that you,
personally have to use one, or that you thing that everyone has to?

If it's the first case, yes, you may need to change some settings, but if
you've already set up the computer to use a proxy, you should have that info
available. Otherwise, if you haven't specifically set up the computer to use
a proxy, then you aren't using one.

Well it work ok. It even found something we can't locate that it can't
remove called Secret-Crush. We can't even find the path to it in XP. It
the UPDATE function that doesn't work - the UPDATE FUNCTION is the problem.

What is Secret-Crush and why is the path to it NOT THERE in windows
explorer????

** IT DOES NOT UPDATE!!!!! I thought I I mentioned that in every message.
:) It LOCKS UP and STOPS RESPONDING when we try to update it. How do YOU
get it to update without allowing it to "stop responding" and locking up?
A message is then sent to Microsoft. What the hell MS has to do with Spybot
is beyond me.
When you say that you have to use a proxy server, are you saying that you,

** Please see Spybots info on what to do when UPDATE does not work - I don't
know if we have a proxy server or even what it is.
If it's the first case, yes, you may need to change some settings, but if
you've already set up the computer to use a proxy, you should have that info

** What is a proxy server? I haven't a clue........

Otherwise, if you haven't specifically set up the computer to use
a proxy, then you aren't using one.

** Then why does the Spybot helpfiles claim that's why I can't update????
That I have to make these changes that I can't even find????

I don't do anything except click the button to look for updates, then when
the list comes up I download them and they install.

As far as the messages to MS, they go to some database where they look for
common problems so they can start working them out based on how many people
have a particular problem.

Then you don't have one. If you're connected to the internet when you have

I think the wording is wrong in the help file. Keep in mind that the author
of this program is not in the US, so English may not be his first language.
While it sounds like you have to have a proxy, it should say that "if" you
are using a proxy, you might have problems with updates unless you have that
set in Spybot.

And if you are using a proxy, there's a checkbox exactly where the help file
says it should be.

But if you don't know what a proxy server is, you don't have one.

i've been using spybot for year now and no problems.
a few updates have not updated.

i did notice the second time i ran spybot/ad-aware that
it was finding cookies that were not spy cookies.
now i just remove cookies before running spybot and every
time it comes up clean.

before running spybot/ad-aware/antivirus programs i
remove cookies/temp/history/recycle files. why check
these for spy/virus? why slow these programs down?
i can get the cookies back by visiting the sites.

Rob

Hi Anon,
If you think that you have deleted all your temp. files, please note that
some files are stored there that are padlocked closed, and do not get
deleted, such as ActiveX controls that have been downloaded from sites, if
you have chosen to have these.
So there is some benefit from re checking the temp file folder.
Rob.

Are you a Blonde? Because you really sound like one!
Spybot had a update on 12/31/03 their are thousands of
people across this planet that are accessing it's site
right now for updates, their server is overwhelmed it
will update but it might take awhile.
I have no ? at all that somewhere on his site it states
that spybot is compatiable with xp so why are you trying
to use the wizard? Oh ya a BLONDE!

I have had this problem but fixed it by selecting a different "Mirror"
site on the Update page (the drop daown list to the left of "Show log"

## OK. The list comes up, and when I click to install I get the "Program Is
Not Responding" message. Then Spybot LOCKS up completely. An error is
then sent to MS.
As far as the messages to MS, they go to some database where they look for
common problems so they can start working them out based on how many people
have a particular problem.

## I'm aware of that - but what has that got to do with Spybot trying to
download and install updates?
have
spybot running, it should simply see that connection and use it.

## OK... it sees it, uses it, a list of updates appears and then it "LOCKS
UP" as soon as I hit the install button. It stops "Responding" and the
error goes to MS. Is this a MS ie6 or ftp or browser problem AGAIN????
I think the wording is wrong in the help file. Keep in mind that the author

And if you are using a proxy, there's a checkbox exactly where the help file
says it should be.
But if you don't know what a proxy server is, you don't have one.

## OK... thanks. Than that's *not* why I can't download the updates and
SpyBot "Stops Responding"... when it tries.
What else can be the problem since the website only mentions a Proxy Server?
Is it another ie6 or ftp problem? And how do I check to make sure? Also we
still can't locate Secret-Crush that Spybot was unable to remove. Any
ideas????
YES, all files, folders and file extensions are SHOWING. The FIND files and
folders program (with the puppydog) cannot find it either.

$$ We've been using Spybot on 3 other computers running W98 with out a
problem either. THIS PC is running XP-home. Sisnce we did the system
restore 12/31 SpyBot will not update.

$$ Yes. But we don't accept anything but those "session" cookies so have
almost none to delete. :)

$$ I agree as we've done the same thing. Then at the end of the month we do
this again, plus do the scan disk and defrag. That usually keeps our PCs
running well for months on end - also we run Norton's WinDr. Great program.
We consider these things necessary maintenance.

** What WIZARD? There's a place in Spybot to choose your OS. XP is not
listed there.

There was no update page in Spybot, just a button to update it. Then a few

There is no mirror site when you click the update button on the Spybot
program. It connects to it's own server evidently, and downloads the
updates - or should.

Free Spirit,
I had a similar problem last week , though it was due to my inexperience in
using the program. What I did was post on their " open forum " & a
few minuets later it was resolved. You might try the same. I've provided a
link below.

Thanks, I'm trying to register there an am waiting for a reply. The only
experience with this program in the past has been good. It found and
removed crap-ware and updated without a problem on all the PCs running W98.

I'm finding all this hard to believe. The download site selection doesn't
appear when you click update. The site selection is in the menu to the left
of the update button - next to the notepad-looking thing that says log.
If you can see that, select FXclips (USA) as your site. All this is at
the top of the window for updates.
