Yesterday I had sound - today I have none...please help

Hello there,

Yesterday I was working away on my computer (IBM ThinkPad R40 with Windows
XP) and all sounds worked fine - today I have no sounds at all - not even
system sounds. I have gone through the entire troubleshooting guide, have
checked all devices - all are enabled with no conflicts - installed the new
update from windows and still nothing. Any Ideas? Please help - I didn't
know where else to turn but here.

Check the volume icon down there on the system tray. It could have been
muted accidentally.

Tried that - the advanced too...nothing is muted. Any other ideas?

Thanks - tried most of those...have not tried is to boot up in safe mode...as
a not so techy user...should I even try or will I just jack it up even more?
