i recieve this error in windows media player:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem
with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on
your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be
functioning properly."

i have IBM T30 laptop, just installed windows xp sp1, updated to sp2
and all other updates,
my sound device stopped working, i have the SoundMax device,
in device manager i can see its installed and working properly, i
tried reinstalling the driver, still have the problem, no sound.
i tried reinstalling plug and play software enumerator with the file
machine.*
doesnt work,
there is a exlamtion mark on the enumerator in device manager that has
no troubleshooting in windows help.
can anyone help me please?

Go into System information>Components>Sound. and have a look what is showing
there. Then in that window Tools>Direct X diagnostic run tests.

i opened system information-sound, i see the status property is: OK.
anything else please?

Did you run the DirectX tests as well ? Have you a graphics card fitted, as
well as an onboard system on your Motherboard. If so there will be conflict
and you may need to disable AC 97 sound if that is the one.
Have you checked your switches on laptop,and you have leads connected
correctly.
Also if you post in windowsxp.hardware. I'm sure there was a similar post

Sometimes, they break. Sometimes, the drivers or the registry corrupts.

any help would be awesome.

Check the device manager, reinstall drivers from the lowest (chipset) up.
