The tabbed browsing experience in the upcoming IE7 beta is pretty basic.
Expect additional end-user functionality to come in after the beta....

Some people have asked why we didn't put tabs in IE sooner. Initially, we
had some concerns around complexity and consistency. will it confuse users
more than it benefits them? Is it confusing if IE has tabs, but other core
parts of the Windows experience, like Windows Media Player or the shell, don't
have tabs? I think we made the wrong decision here initially, and we're
making the right one now. I'd like to ask you to post a comment with your
favorite or most critical IE add-ins. we want to make sure IE7 works great
with them.

Will there be an option to have no tabs if preferred? Personally I see no
benefit to having tabs. Or will MS do this with Explorer too? Perhaps that
will be in Service Pack 14 with WMP24 available as a 5Gig download. ;-p

"I love tabs"
"I hate tabs"
"Put them in, but turn them off by default"
"Put them in, default them on, but let people turn them off".

See why we went back on forth on implementing tabs in IE?

Anyway, IE7 has tabs. You don't have to go someplace to turn them on, they
just work via Ctrl+click, or Ctrl+T, etc. Your finger memory will work just
fine.

Will this functionality come in When third-parties write plugins? Or one has
to purchase a shareware program to get more functionality? Or when some
spyware infected add-on to IE is provided on some website somewhere?

No more confusing than giving the OS the ability to burn a CD but not a DVD.
No more confusing than the tabs one finds in some dialog boxes. MickeyMouse
sure does have a low regard for the intelligence of its user base, I must
say. Tabs would be confusing, indeed!

Ever use Firefox? It has tabs, but you don't see them unless you request
them.

Have you ever tried a tabbed browser? I was of the same mindset and was
slow to start using them when I switched to Firefox, but now that I have I
would not go back. In fact when I have to use IE at work it's almost
painful to use. :) I guess it all depends on your browsing style but I
think the trend is that once people start using them they love them.

Just be careful not to choose Open in Tabs a long list of bookmarks. I did
that to a list of about 30 bookmarks when I first got Firefox, thinking to
myself, "I wonder what this will do?". What a trip!

No one knows yet, keep the page bookmarked as that is where you will find
out info on IE7 as it's released. At least it's official info.

What was the timeframe for DVD's? If I recall correctly, Roxio is the coder
behind it and DVD burners were in a state of confusion and I don't think.
Roxio had DVD capability in their software at the time.

Should it have been added? I would guess that would be within the licensing
agreement with Roxio.

Tabs with google rocks. So much easier than open in a new window.

Well, I already have the equivalent of tabbed browsing and I'm only
using IE6. But I am also using Windows XP and have configured the
Taskbar to group the buttons. That way, I just click on the button in
Taskbar and I can pick which one out of the dozen instances of IE that I
want to use.

Okay, download Mozilla or Opera and find out for yourself! ;-)

Yes, Firefox is excellent but the engine needs works. My web-site looks
different (html only) in Firfox than in IE.

I get that all the time with my software. When a user makes a request for an
option and/or feature, it goes in without question and it doesn't matter
what the default is, so long as they can change it.

As a footnote, I think I'll write an app for IE to make it tabbed. A simple
MDI would do it. Grouping taskbar buttons is fine but there is still a lot
of windows floating around on the desktop.
