Yahoo Messenger archive decoders / how to grep your Yahoo! Messenger archives

D

Dave Burton

I wanted to grep my Yahoo Messenger archives, to find a conversation
that I only vaguely recalled. But the Yahoo Messenger archive files
are in some kind of encoded format, so grep can't search it. So I
looked for a tool that would convert the .dat files to .txt files, so
I could search through them with grep. Here's what I found:

"YahDecode - Yahoo Archive Decoder 0.7"
http://www.intellectualheaven.com/
Nice, and free, but it decodes/displays only one archive file at a
time.

"Yammy (Yahoo Messenger Archive Decoder) 0.2.1.1"
http://yammy.rediffblogs.com/
Free, but very minimalist, and it decodes/displays only one archive
file at a time.

Ikitek's "Yahoo Message Archive Decoder 3.0"
http://www.ikitek.com/products/Yahoo-Message-Archive-Decoder.html
Is crippleware.

Piravi Technologies' "Super Yahoo Messenger Archive Decoder 20.30"
http://www.piravi.com/
Is crippleware.

C.A.M.S. Works' "Yahoo(R) Messenger Archive Decoder"
http://www.geocities.com/camsworksinc/
Not perfect, but the best of the lot (at least the best free one).
Documentation is scant, and there's no installer so you have to
manually create a Programs folder link, and you have to browse around
to find the .dat files. But it works well, and you can convert all
the .dat files for a friend's messenger ID, all at once.

Note: Most or all of these will also bypass the (apparently very weak)
Yahoo Messenger password protection.
