Yahoo Instant Messenger

Upon getting a new laptop with Vista installed, my Yahoo Instant Messenger
will only stay connected for about 15 minutes. I then get a message that
the program has stopped and Windows will let me know when a solution is
created. (Or something like that.)

Anybody have any ideas?

Even the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger is basically unstable with
Vista. Voice doesn't work at all as far as I know. I've heard they're
working on a compatible version, but they've been doing that for almost
2 years, so who knows ...........................

that's bull. I use yahoo messenger with voice all the time on Vista.
It works fine. as does the webcam, the file transfer, and the photo
sharing. I'm on messenger every day and have been, on my vista machine
for the last 3 months or so. There must be an incompatible program on
your system if you are having issues.

How did you get it to work. A bunch of us have searched the web for
solutions to our voice problems with Vista to no avail. We've downloaded
and installed codecs that were recommended, but have never gotten voice
working in Yahoo chatrooms.

Any advice appreciated.

One thing is I didnt load all the extra junk that Yahoo wants to add to
your system. there is a custom install whereby you can choose not to
install all the extras. I"m using 8.1.0.249 currently, but I'm positive
that isnt the exact version that i installed a few months ago. Try
doing an uninstall and make sure to run the minimal install. I don't
recall reading about a particular problem with voice with the version
I'm running as I didnt have any trouble. Good luck! I used to have a
lot more trouble with the various versions of messenger that came out
during the last 18 months. right now it works fine. It's the only chat
software I use, so it gets heavy usage (like 5 simultaneous chats, and
frequent conferences). Not bad for a free app, but I must say that in
the past it sure had some irritating issues with stability.

We have a group that had been using Yahoo! Voice Chat for about 7 or 8
years on a daily basis, but none of us using Vista can get voice working
in any way, shape or form, including YahElite etc. After trying every
solution we could find, we're using other alternatives.

wow. thats amazing, seeing as it works fine here. I have a 3 month old
toshiba laptop with built in mic and webcam. I thought it was really
cool to be able to chat without messing with hooking up a headset/mic
combo. Are your Vista installations fresh versions of Vista or upgrades
from XP? Obviously mine, be a new laptop, came with Vista. and what
was the last version of Yahoo you tried? maybe earlier versions had issues?

This is a new notebook that came with Vista (32-BIT) pre-installed. Yahoo!
Messenger was one of the first apps I installed, and it never would
configure properly. That was back in February. A couple of others in our
little group bought new machines too, and all have had identical results.

The only person we've found who has voice working in chatrooms with Vista is
a fella who's running 64BIT, and he was able to install codecs we found on
the web to get his voice working.

ah, ok. I'm still suspicious of any "full" installs of yahoo
messenger. that's the first thing i would suspect that caused an issue
with the install.

I should add that i had two different versions of messenger installs go
bad when i neglected to delete the extras from the installation
procedure. Uninstalling the programs thru windows (XP) add/remove
progs, followed by a custom install of yahoo messenger w/o extras got me
up and running both last year and this year during their roll outs of
various versions. I would expect that chances are you'll get it to work
now on your Vista laptop if you remove all the yahoo stuff you find on
your pc and start fresh with the current version, doing a bare bones
messenger install. skip the toolbar and other stuff they include with
the messenger download.

Being fairly experienced, I didn't allow Yahoo to do a complete install
either. Didn't seem to have mattered.

well, i'm certainly no expert. I just search for answers online when i
have a problem with the OS or an app. Thank god I'm no longer in a
position requiring me to solve hardware/software problems every day. I
use pc's strictly for personal use now.

I've been doing this since the days of TRSDOS, LDOS & CMP, so I know
what you mean.

Regards,
It always best to check what the supplier is saying.

Yahoo say the Vista version will be available soon. Version 8.1 is said on
the site to work OK now. Go look here:
