XPSP3 update thru AU ! ! !

I have my updates set to your #2 "download but let me choose when to install"
and there has not been any attempt to download it yet. I have went to
microsoft update and the download is there asking if I want to download and
install it. There is a choice to continue to see if other updates are
available if I choose not to install SP3 right now.

Robb,

What is your Automatic Updates setting?
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that:

1. Automatic
"Download and install" will happen in the previously announced June.
[i.e. when it's "pushed"]

3. "Notify but don't download and install" will prompt within 24 hrs of it
being set.

2. "Download but let me choose ... " I'm not sure when, but this is the one
I'm going to choose when I'm ready to do it. I'm guessing that this too will
also be June [i.e. when it's pushed]

If you set a Vista disk in the CD tray upside down,
you can hear SATANIC VOICES!
But that isn't the worst of it,
if you set it the right way IT INSTALLS VISTA!

Well, I do have the SP3 installed which I believe was Refresh Ver 5511 or
something similar...MY COMPUTER only tells me it's SP3 without any version
number and I understood that was the way that version was released prior to
this latest FINAL one. I suppose I'll leave that one alone and wait for the
'push'.

Hang on, RobbL. The SP3 RC2 'Refresh' was version 5508. The SP3 final
version is build 5511. If you have that, you have SP3 final.

I have SP3 RC2 Refresh installed, and I have not received WU, AU or any
other offers (nor do I expect them, unless I uninstall RC2 refresh).

I see you are using IE6. Open up IE >> Help >> 'About Internet explorer'.

What version of IE is shown? '6.0.2900.xxxx'. If xxxx is '5508' then
you still have RC2. If xxxx is 5511, then you have the final version of
SP3.

Sorry, final version build was 5512 (not 5511)

It does not apply to IE7.

I did mention the continuous reboot issue a bit earlier in the thread.

If you have an MCE machine - and probably it has to be from a vendor
mentioned in that thread--this issue may well occur: It is not new with
SP3--the same issue happened with SP2, as I understand it. The fix is to
boot to a command prompt and use the SC command to disable the offending
driver from starting. I believe there are two different drivers which have
been mentioned as causes for this symptom.

This really shouldn't be a concern for anyone other than owners of specific
OEM MCE machines--where the vendor included in their original system image a
driver which was inappropriate for the hardware.

It's definitely a scary symptom--and I gather that thread took awhile before
things were sorted out well, but it is not hard to fix, and the root cause
is really not the SP code.

Are you aware of any significant change between 5508 and 5512?

No, I'm not sure what has changed between 5508 and 5512. The only
difference that nags me is the psychological one - why should I be stuck
with 5508 when 5512 exists :) I'll upgrade when the nagging feeling
becomes too much

Ditto, but this is one of those nagging feelings that will probably never
reach the stage of action for me.

Actually, it changed nothing when I changed the update setting and I haven't
had anything come down the line to me yet...this is since Friday, so I'll
wait till the real push comes in June.

Incidentally, I checked for a version number of the SP3 pack that I have and
it only tells me SP3 on MY COMPUTER and when I look at the IE 6.0 HELP
ABOUT. Who knows what's in there now?

Thanks!

My NUMBERING system is based AU control panel 1,2,3, 4[off]
My ORDERING system is based on how sure I am about the answers 1, 3, 2

Choices 1 and 3 I feel pretty sure about so I put them first.

Choice 2 I'm not so sure about.
If I turn it on Now it COULD in fact start the download in the background
within the next 24hrs. I'm Guessing it will not happen till the June push
(which also is a guess on my part)

So, if you switch to Notify (#3) what will you do if it pops up?
You might want to have the answer ready before you do it ;-)

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the reply but I'm curious about your numbering system...1,3,2?
My machines are set to your #2, "DOWNLOAD but let me choose..." Just for
jollies, I'm gonna change it to #3, "NOTIFY but don't download...." and I'll
let you know if that does anything for me.

Thanks again!
