Waiting for Updates:

Waiting for Updates: A reflection.

It always occurs to me when people talk about waiting for the "shield" to
pop up:

Microsoft does not call "you", "You" call Microsoft [via AU/WU/MU].

How often do you think AU phones home?

How often, once you thought about it, would you "want" AU to phone home???

Once a day, 4 times a day, 8 times a day, once an hour???

If it only checks a few times a day it makes since that there would be a gap
between when people get it.

I know there are other factors in play [load distribution and the like] but
I'd rather hit the check for updates button a few times on Tuesdays and
Thursday afternoons, before 5:00, and get is over with. That's what I did
when I posted the link. I Wanted to get the link up for folks before they
went home for the day. On the days I did it the updates always seemed to be
available by 4:30 Chicago time.

So anyone know the answer? How often does AU check for updates in a day?

Hi Tim,

Ussualy Microsoft call "you" for the critical updates.

You plant a valid question. But I don't kmow how often the sniffer check it.

I wonder what is the diference between Tuesday or Wednesday the same goes
for Thursday to Friday for updates.

I (like you) practic a Safe HEX ;-)

I worry about the PC to be able to anwser when the call come.

That is all folks.

Hi Tim, I'm such a fanatic when it comes to updates that 98% of the time i
Check for Update and never even see a yellow shield. And it goes for all
of my AS, AV and it shows by me finding an update for Defender on a
wednesday.
I'd also like to say you and Dave did a nice job while Engel was away.
Enjoy your night. Ron

Thanks for saying that Ron, but Engel is the undisputed Sig Update Pro and
I hope he gets back into form with that new system of his really soon. It
seems I can't even copy a line without making a darn typo error.

Hi Dave M,

Little by little.

This morning at the start up of the pC the shield pop up.

The scheduled time was the default 2:00 AM for checking

I finish to change the time to 12:00 PM, I hoppe now this change speed the
time to get the shield up the same day of the D/L, and no have to wait until
the next day.

Let see if the change is productive.

Automatic Updates will check for updates every 22 hours by defaut.
How often, once you thought about it, would you "want" AU
to phone home???

You can configure AU to call home by using a simple registry policy.

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
Name: DetectionFrequencyEnabled
Type: DWORD
Value: 1

Name: DetectionFrequency
Type: DWORD
Value: The number of hours to check for updates in **decimal**. You can only
go as high as 22 or low as 1.
