WD-G & Update Restore Points

Well,

Thanks to Engel I knew there was an update to the def/sigs for Windows
Defender-G ([G]amma, [G]old, [G]eneral release, whatever) last night so I
decided to do a test. When I got home I started XP and turned off Windows
AU. I opened the Defender UI and clicked check for updates. Updates came
down fine. I checked with the System Restore Utility and a "Software
Distribution" Check/Restore Point was created.

MS WD Team,
There is no reason why Updating thru the UI needs to do this. There is no
reason to have a Restore Point for something as minor a Def/Sig update,
unless you don't trust your own updating process and think it can mess up
Windows. If someone is using the UI to update they probably have WU/MU turned
off.

I understand that when WD updates thru WU/MU that these services create an
SRP by default and there is probably nothing you can do about that. But
there is No reason why there needs to be a SRP "trigger" in the Defender UI.

When the Updates are installed thru "Engel's Links" NO SRP is created, ERGO
the SRPs are not being "triggered" by the updates themselves but by the
Delivery method used.

Please Remove the SRP "trigger" when Updating thru the Defender UI. It is
not needed and is a waste of resources.

Respectfully,
?:)

Hi Tim,

As it turns out, clicking "Check for updates" through the WD UI _does_ use
WU/MU to get the signatures.
I can assure you, it's not WD doing the checkpoint, it's the WU service
doing it, and nothing WD an do can supress it.

"Engel's links" as you note, skip the whole WU/MU detection path, which is
what the UI button uses to find the update you need, and snaps the
checkpoint.

Regards,
Joe
