WD Final not installing updates

A

Andrew

I've installed WD Final and now it won't download any updates.

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1592.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1603.0

Definition Version: 1.0.0.0

The Def. Version is dated 1/25/06, I can't believe this is still the most
recent. Plus WD sits in the system tray with the yellow explanation (!)
showing, which I take to mean there's a problem.

Hello Andrew,

Does AutoUpdate work on your system?
Try going to Windows Update and applying all offered critical updates.

The same thing happened to me yesterday, as I upgraded from Beta 2.

In fact WD /was/ updating itself and finally did show as such. I just
think the UI is a bit misleading at first. There's no feedback to tell
you that the update is in progress.

should get you on the right path. Is this a home machine, or one on a
managed corporate or institutional network? Did you have any previous
versions installed, and did they update?

Bill,

When I reply to your message in which you top-posted, I don't get the
OP's text. This is because it comes after your signature, which starts
with "--". This is yet another reason why top-posting is sub-optimal.

Cheers!

The update proceeds via AutoUpdate. I've only done one upgrade installation
so far--I know that if an update is triggered manually, via help, about--the
visible signs are a balloon at the start of updating, and another when
update is complete (or nothing found.) Some users have balloon
notifications turned off, and others have reported that these balloons fail
to appear after some time.. I haven't investigated this at all.

The machine is a work computer attached to the domain with WSUS, which I've
configured to pull down WD updates.

Updating works fine for everything else.

I can't be sure that I didn't have a beta installed. I honestly don't
recall, because I know I was running it on my home computer.

I did at one point follow MS article 915105, it worked to uninstall the
updates, but it would still not install new updates after that. I just
tried it again and when I run the remove command for the signatures; it
stated this action is only valid for products that are currently installed.

I did visit: http://www.windowsupdate.com. Which found a virus def. update
which was labeled for BETA Windows Defender, which installed.

So am I running a beta, or has MS not updated there system?

The help with WD states it is the final version.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

You are running the final version. The updates, which work with either
version, are still labelled as for the beta.

Above's the current KB article on how to configure WSUS to bring in Windows
Defender definitions.

I'm not completely sure what you have tried so far, but this is what I'd
try:

Go to a command prompt in the Windows Defender installation folder on a
client machine--typically c:\program files\windows defender.

Type these two commands, hitting enter and waiting for completion between
them. The second command may take some time to complete.

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All
mpcmdrun -SignatureUpdate
