XPsp2 advice please

Had a very well functioning sp1 installation.
Installed sp2 and the could not connect to Windows update after, and in
addition, although my network and internet were working fine, I have no
Network Connections visible in Control Panel/network connections
Worrying to say the least!

Has anyone seen/resolved this problem?

I would do a little Google searching.

For example,

This is a Proxy Authentication error. Does your proxy require
authentication? What proxy server are you running? Configure the proxy to
allow updates.
